Impeccable Timing for First Career Touchdown

It has not always been pretty but in the end they got it done. The Sun Devils finished off the regular season with a gratifying 20-17 win over their arch rivals, the University of Arizona Wildcats. For senior tight end Tyrice Thompson this was an especially memorable victory. He walked off the field with not only a "W" but his first career touchdown.

"I didn't know he was going to throw it but I tell Rudy all the time that if he puts it in the air I'll go get it," Thompson said of his touchdown. "I do it all the time in practice. I believe if you work hard in practice, you do it in the game. And that's what happened. He threw it in the air and I got it."

With 10:06 remaining in the second quarter Carpenter threw a risky shovel pass to the back of the end zone that Thompson, self nicknamed ‘The Elevator' reached up and caught for the touchdown. His friends and family cheered from the stands of his hometown as he walked off the field with his very first touchdown.

"It was great," recalled Thompson. "My family and friends were in the stands and I got to show them what I'm all about."

Not only was it the final game of the season, but it was also Senior's Day. All of the Sun Devil seniors on the team were honored before the start of the game for their hard work and dedication to the Arizona State University Football Program.

"Everything happens as it should," Thompson remarked on a night that was special for so many reasons. "All good things must come to and end. The way we went out is perfect. I don't have any complaints and I'm ready to move on to this bowl."

Throughout his career at ASU Thompson played a number of various positions including wide receiver, tight end and defensive end. "It tells you what type of player I am," Thompson stated. "Whatever you tell me to do, I'm going to do it. You want me to play defense, I'll play defense. You want me to play offense, I'll play offense."

"They gave me an opportunity to do great things and I seized it once again. I'm a hard worker and all my teammates are hard workers. That's not just me, that's my whole team."

In last week's game against USC Thompson had a close call. He blocked a punt, and although he thought he was going to finally reach the promise land, it turned out not to be a touchdown.

"I waited for that touchdown for so long," noted Thompson. "I had that punt recovery and knew what it felt like to think you have a touchdown, but then I hugged the ref and he was like, ‘no, it's not a touchdown.' I knew what it felt like, but just never had one. To actually get one was wonderful. I didn't want to celebrate, I just wanted to pretend like I have been here before so I just handed to ball off and went to celebrate with my teammates."

When looking back on the season Thompson felt that as a team they could honestly say that they left it all out on the field every time, and that he has not regrets. "Everything happened as it should," recollected Thompson. "We all gave it all we had and this is what we got. We made that bed and now we're layin' in it and it feels good."

Which Bowl Game ASU will end up in is yet to be decided but as they have done all season they will put their hearts into it. They may not do so until the second half, but ultimately they always show up.

"My plans are to just keep working hard and just get ready for this bowl game," said Thompson, "and hopefully we can go to the Fiesta Bowl and take it all."
