Bass Moves Forward in Playoffs, Recruiting

On the field, Ryan Bass' sensational senior season hasn't come to an end quite yet. The Huskies of Corona (Calif.) Centennial have won their division championship, and are marching onto the state championship game. Off the field, his recruiting has not concluded as well. Devils Digest talked to the four-star running back and Arizona commit about the schools pursuing him and his recruitment status.

On Saturday, the 13-1 Huskies crushed Santiago 42-7 in the Southern CIF Inland Division Championship game. Ryan Bass had a modest one touchdown contribution in this route. "I took easy that game," he quipped.

Nonetheless, on the year Bass has been anything but a modest contributor. He has tallied 29 rushing touchdowns and 1849 yards, averaging just over seven yards a carry. "It's been a fun year," he noted.

This Saturday, Bass and his teammates will play in one of three state championships California Bowl games, against an undefeated Concord De La Salle.

In regards to recruiting, Bass who committed to Arizona on his official visit there November 4th, indicated that that his pledge isn't solid as he's about to continue and check out the other schools that have been courting him.

"I was supposed to visit Arizona State this weekend, but I couldn't because I had a game," Bass explained. "So, I'm gonna visit them January 11th and Fresno State January 18th. I'm not gonna visit any other schools after that."

The Sun Devils, according to the running back, have been "recruiting me pretty hard." ASU's Safeties Coach Matt Lubick visited Bass last week, and will make a return trip in a few days accompanied by Sun Devil Running Backs Coach Jamie Christian. "My top school is Arizona State," Bass stated. "I feel more comfortable with Arizona State than with Arizona…when Coach Lubick met with me we talked about academics and me playing next year."

In regards to the Centennial standout's academics, it has been well documented that Bass does have a significant amount of work to complete in order to qualify. "I'm planning to work hard and make it," he commented. "I have to improve both my GPA and test score, but more my test score. I'm retaking the SAT on January 26th."

Bass admitted that he has tried to watch every ASU game on TV, and feels comfortable with the running style the maroon and gold employ. "They run with a lot of zone blocking," he remarked, "and I like that because that's what I'm used to in high school."

The running back acknowledged that it is going to be quite the compliment to see both Arizona schools fighting for his services between now and Letter of Intent Day. This is a tribute to his sensational senior campaign, a year where he stated he "practiced harder and that helped me improve my speed and everything else about my game. I'm having a lot of fun playing now and I'm ready to take it to the next level."

And which school will Ryan Bass display his skills at, is a question that may not be answered for several weeks from now…
