The 6-2 295 Spencer Gasu talked in the past about "wrapping up his recruitment quickly." He did also state that he was planning to visit Cal in January, before settling on a school. Nonetheless, on Friday afternoon he decided to end his recruitment and pledge to the maroon and gold.
Gasu visited this past weekend in Tempe and heaped a lot of praise on ASU Head Coach Dennis Erickson. "I spent a lot of time with Coach Erickson, and he was telling me how he can help me get to the next level," said Gasu in a previous interview to Devils Digest. "He told me how ASU is second in the Pac-10 graduating athletes."
"He wants to build a national champion, and he's been there before so he knows how to get there. They're co-Pac-10 champions, and they had a shot winning a national championship in his first year. He's a hall of fame coach."
The defensive tackle was recruited out of Valencia High School by ASU's previous coaching regime. He spent two years at Santa Ana, after a greyshirt year at Mt. San Antonio College. He didn't hear much from the Sun Devils in his freshman year at Santa Ana, but for the last few months of his sophomore campaign he has been recruited in earnest by ASU's safeties coach Matt Lubick. He decommitted from Oregon, and visited Utah before tripping to Tempe.
"I'm really quick off the ball," said Gasu who reported running a 4.8. "If I'm running down a running back, I'm pretty sure I'll get him. I spend a lot of time in the film room and that helps me be smarter about the game, have more recognition and awareness on the field, and prepare myself better."
Gasu is ASU's 17th known commitment of the 2008 recruiting class. He is scheduled to graduate in the spring and will have three years to play two.
