Sun Devil Recruiting Snap Shot

With 27 known commits on hand, the available spots for ASU's 2008 recruiting class are becoming extremely scarce. Few targets remain on the Sun Devils' recruiting board, as the coaching staff tries in earnest to bring them on board. Devils Digest analyzed the team's recruiting picture, as it stands today, at each and every position.

Quarterbacks

Returning Players and 2008 class status:

Rudy Carpenter Danny Sullivan Chasen Stangel Samson Szakacsy

Verbal Commitments:

Jack Elway

Prospects: Sean Renfree

It is now a three-school race for Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep standout Sean Renfree. Aside from Arizona State the schools that are receiving serious consideration from the local signal caller Boise State and Duke.

When analyzing this position, it's obvious that it's Renfree or bust. In other words, Elway could be the only quarterback in the recruiting class, as they are no backup plans in the event that Renfree won't pledge to ASU. Sources close to Renfree's recruitment have told us that Renfree currently isn't favoring the Sun Devils and seems quite intent on leaving the state. That being said, it is believed that his parents do want him to commit to the hometown school.

Casey Kelly, a two-sport star, visited the Sun Devils this past weekend. The recruiting trip had a much stronger baseball flavor to it than football. If the Sarasota (Fla.) star did decide to don the maroon and gold, he would initially be on a baseball scholarship and then move to a football one in 2009.

Offensive Line

Returning Players and 2008 class status:

Paul Fanaika Sr.
Thomas Altieri Jr.
Shawn Lauvao Jr.
Richard Tuitu'u Jr.
Garth Gerhart RS-Fr.
Matt Hustad RS-Fr.
Michael Marcisz RS-Fr.
Adam Tello RS-Fr.

Verbal Commitments:

Patrick Jamison
Kyle Johnson
Tom Njunge
Andrew Sampson
Zach Schlink

Prospects: Hamani Stevens

Hamani Stevens is the only prospect here that ASU could land, and the Sun Devil staff is willing to wait until Letter of Intent Day for him to make up his mind. His list of schools has narrowed down to ASU, Oregon and BYU. With a looming All-Star game on the 26th of this month, which Stevens will participate in, the Hemet center isn't expected to make any decisions before that contest. It is believed that Stevens is currently the most viable prospect left on ASU's recruiting board.

Tight End

Returning Players and 2008 class status:

Dane Guthrie Sr.
Andrew Pettes Sr.
Jovon Williams Jr.
Lance Evbuomwan Soph.
Dan Knapp RS-Fr.

Verbal Commitments:

Steven Figueroa
Toa Tuitea

Prospects: None

The Sun Devils have no plan on recruiting at this position for the 2008 class.

Running Backs

Returning Players and 2008 class status:

Keegan Herring Sr.
Shaun DeWitty Jr.
Dimitri Nance Jr.
Jarrell Woods, Jr.

Verbal Commitments: Ryan Bass

Prospects:

It was widely believed that ASU would try and have two running backs sign a Letter of Intent of Feb. 6th. Part of that was the then tenuous academic standing of Bass. Earlier today Devils Digest was informed by well placed sources that Bass' chances of qualifying have improved quite a bit. Thus, signing just one running back in the class could is a very distinct possibility.

Mark Ingram is ASU's number one target at this position, however reports indicate that he isn't seriously considering ASU due to the fact that the Sun Devils started recruiting him very late in the season. Johnathan Franklin visited Tempe this past weekend and ASU would likely welcome him if he did de-commit from UCLA in the near future. Brynn Harvey is tentatively scheduled to visit the Sun Devils this weekend, so his viability as a prospect is somewhat unclear. Devin Thomas has been dropped from ASU's consideration.

Wide Receiver

Returning Players and 2008 class status:

Mike Jones Sr.
Nate Kimbrough Sr.
Chris McGaha Jr.
Brandon Smith Jr.
Kyle Williams Jr.
Kerry Taylor So.
Rodney Glass So.
T.J. Simpson RS-Fr.

Verbal Commitments:

Jarrell Barbour
Kemonte Bateman
Gerell Robinson
Keelan Johnson
A.J. Pickens

Prospects: None

The Sun Devils have no plan on recruiting at this position for the 2008 class. This holds true even in light of the fact that chances are slim that Jarrell Barbour will qualify academically.

Defensive Line

Returning Players and 2008 class status:

Alex Asi Sr.
Wes Evans Sr.
David Smith Sr.
Paul 'Unga Sr.
Luis Vasquez Sr.
Dexter Davis Jr.
Eric Tanner Jr.
Jonathan English So.
Saia Falahola So.
Jon Hargis So.
Zach Niusulu So.
Bo Moos RS-Fr.
James Brooks RS-Fr.

Verbal Commitments:

Zeb Togiai
Lawrence Guy
Ottis Jones
Spencer Gasu
Eugene Germany

Prospects: None

With Jamaar Jarrett committing to Oregon, and Datone Jones sticking with his UCLA commitment, it appears that ASU doesn't have any prospects on the board at this position. Guy is reported to have quite a bit of work, academically speaking to accomplish, but they're currently aren't any plans to try and bring another defensive lineman aboard as an insurance policy.

Linebackers

Returning Players and 2008 class status:

Antone Saulsberry Sr.
Morris Wooten Sr.
Travis Goethel Jr.
Chad Lindsey Jr.
Ryan McFoy Jr.
Gerald Munns Jr.
Mike Nixon Jr.
Jeff Bereuter So.
Jamarr Robinson So.
Oliver Aaron RS-Fr.
Derrall Anderson RS-Fr.

Verbal Commitments: None

Brandon Magee
Shelly Lyons

Prospects: Donovan Carter

As much excitement as there is in the ASU camp over the pledges of Magee and Lyons, the Sun Devils would welcome Donovan Carter into the fold as well. The UCLA commit did admit to still be favoring the Bruins, but as long as he hasn't eliminated ASU a chance still does exist.

Defensive Backs

Returning Players and 2008 class status:

Angelo Fobbs-Valentino Sr.
Troy Nolan Sr.
Rodney Cox Sr.
Jeremy Payton Sr.
Grant Crunkleton Jr.
Jarrell Holman Jr.
Travis Smith Jr.
Omar Bolden So.
Jonathan Clark RS-Fr.
Colin Parker RS-Fr.

Verbal Commitments:

Allante Battle
Deveron Carr
Terell Carr
Clint Floyd
Max Tabach
Keelan Johnson
Josh Jordan

Prospects: Charles Germany-Satchell

With Herman Davidson's no longer considered a prospect, Charles Germany-Satchell, who already visited ASU, remains the only possibility here (and if committed to the Sun Devils could still line up at wide receiver). Germany-Satchell's viability as a prospect is somewhat uncertain at this point. He's considered a heavy lean to Cal, but his academic qualifications of being accepted to that school seem to be in question. It is believed that if he cannot gain entrance to that school that he may land with the Sun Devils.

Special Teams:

Returning Players and 2008 class status:

Thomas Weber So.
Zach Richards RS-Fr.

Verbal Commitments: None

Prospects: None

For the second half of the season, Lou Groza award winner Weber handled both kicking and punting duties. Head Coach Dennis Erickson didn't rule out the sophomore doing double-duty again in 2008. He also mentioned that Richards, who was pushing Weber hard for place kicking duties in fall camp, is a possibility as the team's punter next season. Erickson added that a high school punter will be pursued, although that player will likely be a walk-on.
