Devils Use Long Ball to Rout Troy

The Arizona State Sun Devil offense has shown that it can beat teams in many different ways. On Saturday night in front of 2,785 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark the top-ranked Devils scored six of their eight runs on home run balls to take game two from the Troy Trojans 8-1.

Freshman Seth Blair got the start for ASU and allowed Troy to jump on the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth. Troy designated hitter Michael Precise led off the fourth with a double and would eventually score on a fielders' choice.

Blair lasted 3 1/3 innings allowing one run on two hits. Reyes Dorado relieved Blair in the fourth and threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings.

The ASU offense would give Dorado and the Devils the lead for good in the bottom half of the fourth when Ike Davis connected for his first home run of the night, this one a two-run shot to right field, making it 2-1 ASU.

ASU would pad their lead in their fifth when Brett Wallace followed a Ryan Sontag walk with a double to left field plating Sontag. Wallace would come around to score when Petey Paramore sent his first home run of the season to right centerfield. Wallace led off the seventh with his third hit of the day, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a passed ball before scoring on Paramore's RBI single. Davis, who was last week's Pac-10 Player of the Week, followed with a blast to right field for his second home run of the day. It was Davis' third multi-home run game in the past week. The junior first baseman finished the day 3-4 with 4 RBIs.

Dorado, who is a candidate to take over the closers role for Pat Murphy after the departure of Jason Jarvis, picked up his third victory of the season out of the bullpen, tying Mike Leake for the team lead. Dustin Brader and RJ Preach each worked a scoreless inning to seal the victory for the Sun Devils.

The talented trio of Paramore, Davis and Wallace showed their possible first round potential by accounting for eight of ASU's ten hits on Saturday evening and drove in all eight of their runs.

The Devils will host the Trojans for the third and final game of the series on Sunday. The first pitch Sunday is at 1PM before the ASU will get ready for the Duel in the Desert on Tuesday when the Devils face off with the #2 Arizona Wildcats. Arizona will finish up their three game series with #21 Cal St. Fullerton on Sunday. The Wildcats have taken the first two games of the series.
