Titans Top Devils In Ninth

All the talk surrounding the lack of a third starter for ASU can be expanded to Mike Leake and everyone else. Josh Satow, who was key to the Devils run to the Pac-10 Championship last season, continued his rough 2008 season by allowing 7 runs in 5 innings as Cal St. Fullerton used a single by Christian Colon in the 9th off of Ike Davis to escape with a 10-9 victory at Goodwin Field.

Things looked promising in the top half of the first as ASU exploded for five runs and chased Fullerton starter Travis Kelly before he could get out of the first inning. Jason Kipnis doubled with one out to start the rally and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kelly then walked Brett Wallace and Ike Davis followed with a double to left that scored Kipnis and made it 1-0 Devils. After a Petey Paramore walk, Matt Newman reached on a single that scored Wallace. Raoul Torrez then dropped down a safety squeeze that scored Davis and Kelly misplayed the bunt allowing Torrez to reach. Greg Bordes, making his second consecutive start at shortstop, connected for a two-out, two-run double that put ASU in front 5-0.

ASU would not see many more clutch hits as the Devils would strand 15 runners on base, something that has haunted them over the last few weeks.

The Titans would begin to chip away at the lead right away, as Josh Satow continued to struggle. Christian Colon singled with one out and Erik Komatsu walked, before Corey Jones singled up the middle to score Colon and make it 5-1 Devils. Jared Clark would follow with a double that scored two runs that cut the Devils' lead to 5-3.

Fullerton would get to Satow further in the second and rally back to take the lead. Satow walked the light hitting Dustin Garneau (.183) to start the inning and Gary Brown would make him pay with a two-run home run to left to tie the game at 5-5. Colon would start things again for the Titans with a one out single and would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by Corey Jones to give Fullerton the lead.

The Devils would tie the game in the third off of Fullerton reliever Jason Dovel. Raoul Torrez led off with a walk and stole second base before pinch hitter Kiel Roling drove him in with an RBI single to left.

Satow would eventually settle down and the game stayed tied at 6-6 all the way until the sixth inning. After Satow walked Josh Fellhauer to start the inning, ASU Head Coach Pat Murphy took the ball from his senior lefty and gave it to Dustin Brader. Brader proceeded to get two outs before Corey Jones singled to right scoring Fellhauer and putting Fullerton back on top at 7-6. Brader hit Jared Clark with a pitch and Brian Wilson made him pay with a triple to right that scored two and made it 9-6 Titans.

ASU would score once in the seventh before tying the game in the eighth. Greg Bordes led off the seventh with his second double of the game and came around to score on an error by Titans' 2B Corey Jones on a ball hit by Brett Wallace. Raoul Torrez was the igniter for the rally in the eighth as he led off with a single and stole second for the second time in the game. Just like earlier in the game, Kiel Roling followed with a hit to score Torrez, this time an RBI double. Jason Kipnis would come through in the clutch with a two-out RBI single that scored Roling to tie the score at 9-9.

Ike Davis got the first out of the ninth before Brown sent a rocket into the right field corner and the speedster cruised into third with a one out triple. Murphy moved his infield in and it worked as Davis got Fellhauser to send a soft ground ball to Wallace, forcing Brown to stay at third. Christian Colon would make sure that there would be no free baseball in Fullerton as he sent a single to left that scored Brown with the winning run and the Titans walked off winners.

Satow pitched five innings on just three days after his last start. The senior allowed seven runs on eight hits to pick up the no decision. Dustin Brader allowed two runs in his inning of work. An encouraging sign for the Devils was a strong performance from Jason Franzblau. Franzblau didn't allow a run in 1 2/3 innings of work on Tuesday night.

Jason Kipnis had three hits for ASU and Ike Davis, Greg Bordes and Kiel Roling each had two hits. Brett Wallace reached base five times via three walks and a hit by pitch.

The Devils and Titans will finish their two-game series tomorrow evening at Goodwin Field. Lefty Kevin Rath (0-0, 4.15 ERA) will get the ball for the Titans at 6PM. The Devils have yet to announce a starter.
