Osweiler Pledges to Sun Devils

As reported first on Scout.com QB Brock Osweiler, who previously committed to play basketball at Gonzaga, verbaled to Arizona State on Wednesday afternoon. The Montana QB called Scout.com's Chris Fetters just minutes after verbaling to coach Dennis Erickson and talked about his decision.

Arizona State was the first school to offer the 6-8 235 Brock Osweiler back in September. The Sun Devil recruiting efforts paid off today when the Montana signal caller committed to the maroon and gold.

"After months of my stomach turning and my mind going non-stop I got a feeling this morning that I've never had before in my life," said Osweiler. "I'm going to go play football for Arizona State. I just talked to Dennis Erickson a few minutes ago."

"During this time I had a very good idea as to the schools I was considering and what schools were interested in me. I had great interest in UCLA, but they hadn't offered. I had great interest in Florida State, but no offer. Alabama showed great interest, but no offer."

"Alabama and Florida State are on a different part of the country, a completely different way of life there - so Phoenix is a great fit."

What's probably more remarkable in all of this is that Osweiler never even set foot in Tempe yet.

"I feel that I have the same thing in Dennis Erickson that I did with the Gonzaga staff - good people that I know and I can trust," he explained. "I've been in the Phoenix Airport, but I haven't been there. But I've talked to a bunch of people and they've told me it's the most beautiful campus they've been on."

Osweiler, who was recruited by ASU's safeties coach Matt Lubick, did inform the Gonzaga coaches about his decision, and overall he's very much at peace not only with his choice of school, but also choice of sport.

"I feel really content right now. It's a relief and a feeling I haven't had in months," he stated. "When all this clicked today, I couldn't even stay in class. I told my teacher, 'Man, I gotta go. I gotta go talk to my coach or someone.'"

"I've been getting on daily to see what quarterbacks are committing. I went to Florida State's recruiting class, and I'm aware they have E.J. Manuel. But when I looked at E.J. Manuel, I kept thinking back to Jemarcus Russell. You can tell he is the right fit for Coach Jimbo Fisher and Florida State."

"I clicked on Arizona State's list and saw Jack Elway listed. I look forward to meeting him and getting to compete with him. Then I saw that they had four solid receiver signees and a great tight end, and that's when everything started clicking. Everything got in order. There was a check mark with Arizona State next to it in my head, so I knew that was it."

"It was like a little god-fairy flew into my stomach and just opened up a note and it said 'ASU'. That was it."

Later tonight we'll have a more extensive interview with ASU's newest commit of the 2009 recruiting class.
