Chandler WR Offered by Hometown School

Chandler High School standout Markus Wheaton has already been enjoying a lot of recruiting attention, and has several offers to show for it. On Wednesday ASU jumped into the fray and extended a scholarship offer.

"I was surprised Arizona State offered me this early," said the 6-1 175 Markus Wheaton. "I knew they were recruiting me and I knew an offer was coming, but I thought they were gonna offer me only after their passing league."

"I've seen a lot of games of ASU last year. I didn't think they would be that good of a team. I like the players and I know T.J. Simpson and Keegan Herring and they're trying to recruit me to go there. The coaches there are very nice."

Wheaton added that whatever school he goes to he would like to also run track, and he was impressed with the world class surface at the Sun Angel Stadium.

Colorado, Colorado State, Oregon, Oregon State, Arizona, SMU and Utah have already offered the Chandler wide receiver. Wheaton felt that the eight offers he has to date validate the solid junior campaign he had.

Last season, Wheaton was named 1st team all region and honorable mention all state. He caught 23 passes for 476 yards and six TDs. He also rushed for 315 yards and four scores, and as a defensive back he recorded 49 tackles and one interception.

"I feel that I have good agility and quickness, but I want to get quicker," said Wheaton of his skills. "I was timed at a 4.58 and I want to bring it to a 4.4. I got stronger in the weight room and I bench a max of 285 and I did 15 reps of 185."

The wide receiver has already visited Oregon and Colorado, and expressed no preference of staying close to home or venturing out of state. According to Wheaton, those two schools along with ASU are likely to receive official visits from him in the fall.

"I don't expect to make an early decision," he noted. "I want to take my visits first. I'm looking for a good program where I really can get along with the head coach and my position coach."

Wheaton is scheduled to be in attendance at the Under Armour/ Scout.com Phoenix Combine this weekend, but has no plans to attend additional camps and/or combines this summer.

The wide receiver carries a 2.8 GPA and took the SAT earlier this month.
