Devils Ride Leake in Rout of Oklahoma

Even though the scoreboard at Packard Stadium showed the Arizona State Sun Devils as the visitors on Saturday night, everybody knew who the true home team was. The Devils continued their domination of post-season games at home in Tempe with a 15-3 romp of Oklahoma in the ever-so-important winners bracket matchup that moved them one win away from advancing to the Super Regional.

Oklahoma starter Ryan Duke helped the Devils get on the board first in the top of the second inning with a throwing error that allowed a run to score. Ike Davis started the inning with a single to left center and advanced to second on an error by Sooner leftfielder Casey Johnson. Petey Paramore singled sending Davis to third and Davis scored when Duke threw away a pickoff attempt to make it 1-0 ASU.

After allowing a single to Kiel Roling and walking Matt Newman, Duke once again handed the Devils a run by throwing a wild pitch that allowed Paramore to score. Raoul Torrez added an RBI infield single to make it 3-0 Devils.

ASU would blow it open in the top of the third by plating four more runs. Petey Paramore started things with a one out single up the middle and after Kiel Roling popped out for the second out, Matt Newman and Raoul Torrez walked to load the bases.

Greg Bordes would make the two out walks hurt by singling up the middle to score Newman and Paramore and made it 5-0 ASU. Ryan Sontag kept the inning alive with an RBI single to left that scored Torrez and Bordes would eventually come into score on a botched rundown by Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, ASU ace Mike Leake was dominating the Sooner lineup until Aaron Baker connected for his first of two home runs on the day in the fourth to make it 7-1 Devils.

The Sooners added a run in the fifth off of Leake to make it 7-2. Jamie Johnson doubled with one out and after a lineout by Aljay Davis, Mike Gosse singled to right to score Johnson.

A rare source of power helped the Devils rebuild their large lead in the sixth. Ike Davis walked with one out and after Petey Paramore flew out for out number two, Kiel Roling extended the inning with a single. Mike Jones then sent just his second home run of his career over the right field fence for a three-run opposite field homer that made it 10-2.

The Devils took advantage of another Oklahoma error in the seventh to plate another run. Jason Kipnis doubled to center with two outs and stole third on the same pitch that walked Brett Wallace, but a throwing error by the Sooner catcher allowed Kipnis to score and make it 11-2.

ASU scored four more in the top of the ninth to put the game even further out of reach. Greg Bordes led off with a walk and Ryan Sontag singled. Brett Wallace was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out, before Ike Davis unloaded them. Davis sent a triple to center that cleared the bases and gave ASU a 15-2 advantage.

Aaron Baker added his second homer of the day off of Dustin Brader in the ninth to cut the lead to 15-3.

Mike Leake went eight strong innings to pick up his 10th victory of the season. The sophomore ace walked just two and struck out six en route to pitching his team to a crucial postseason victory.

Ryan Sontag, Ike Davis and Petey Paramore each collected three hits in Saturday's victory over Oklahoma. Davis and Mike Jones each drove in three runs and Greg Bordes added 2 RBI.

The Devils now are sitting atop and in the drivers' seat of the Tempe Regional. ASU will play tomorrow night at 6PM against the winner of the rematch between Oklahoma and Vanderbilt tomorrow at 1PM. The Devils will send Josh Satow (8-3, 4.99) to the hill with hopes of claiming victory and a trip to the Super Regionals.
