Satow's Gem Leads ASU to Super Regionals

You almost had to see this coming. A tired Oklahoma team that had to grind out a victory just to face ASU just didn't have anything left, on the mound and at the plate. Winning the first two games of the regional proved beneficial for the Devils as a well rested Josh Satow dominated the Sooners in front of 2,553 at Packard Stadium, leading them to a 12-0 victory and into the Super Regionals.

The Devils jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the second inning off of Oklahoma starter Jeremy Erban. Ike Davis led off with a single to right and came around to score on a double to left center by Kiel Roling.

ASU blew the game open in the third by plating six runs to move ahead 7-0. Jason Kipnis singled with one out and Brett Wallace followed with a base hit sending Kipnis to third. Ike Davis brought Kipnis home with a single to right. Petey Paramore made it 3-0 with ASU's fourth straight single in the inning.

Kiel Roling drew a walk to load the bases and then Erban walked Matt Newman to force in ASU's fourth run of the evening. Greg Bordes blew the inning open with a double to center that cleared the bases and put Satow and the Devils in control of the game.

Brett Wallace walked and stole second base in the fourth inning and came around to score on a double by Petey Paramore. Paramore came up limping into second base and left the game with a quad strain. ASU Head Coach Pat Murphy said that his junior captain is going to ready for next weekend's Super Regional.

Mike Jones was hit by a pitch with one out in the fifth and after stealing second, Jones came around to score on a two out RBI single by Ryan Sontag.

Kiel Roling hit a monster shot onto Rio Salado in the seventh for his eighth home run to make it 10-0 ASU. Jason Kipnis hit his 14th of the season in the eighth and Kiel Roling added an RBI single to make it 12-0.

Josh Satow didn't need twelve runs the way he pitched on Sunday evening. The ASU senior allowed a hit and worked out of a jam in the first inning but then was dominant. Satow sat down 15 Sooners in a row at one point before an Oklahoma infield single broke up the stretch. The All-Pac 10 selection allowed just three hits in 7 1/3 scoreless innings and got a standing ovation from the crowd at Packard Stadium when he left in the eighth.

Reyes Dorado got the last two outs of the eighth before handing the ball over to Ike Davis for the ninth. It was the first time Davis was on the mound since April 22nd due to a rib injury that kept him on the shelf. Davis worked a 1-2-3 ninth and sealed the deal on the victory that sent ASU into the Super Regional.

Kiel Roling and Ike Davis each had three hits for the Sun Devils and Roling drove in three runs. Davis was named the MVP of the Tempe Regional and was joined on the All-Regional Tournament team by teammates Josh Satow, Mike Leake, Petey Paramore, Greg Bordes, Brett Wallace and Ryan Sontag.

ASU now will await the winner of the Long Beach Regional, which will not be host and #1 seed Long Beach State, who was eliminated by San Diego Sunday. San Diego also took down #4 seeded Fresno State (39-28) on Sunday to force a final elimination game on Monday. If the Toreros of San Diego (44-16) are victorious tomorrow, it will set up one of the premier pitching matchups in the country as Phoenix-native Brian Matusz (12-2, 1.71 ERA) would take on Mike Leake in Game 1 on Friday at Packard Stadium.
