Kennard Visits ASU, Gets Ready to Trim List

Devon Kennard holds roughly 30 offers, and the Desert Vista standout knows that he must narrow down his list to a more manageable number. As he prepares for that task he's closely examining various schools so he can formulate a single digit file. His latest stop in that process was a visit to Arizona State. Devils Digest caught up with the nation's top defensive end following that visit to Tempe.

Last Wednesday, the 6-3 255 Devon Kennard was accompanied by his parents as they took the short drive to Arizona State. Naturally, this was hardly the first time he saw the Sun Devil campus and met with the ASU coaches. Nonetheless, the defensive end truly still came away impressed.

"It was a good visit," said Kennard. "I got to know all the coaches there even better. I'm very impressed with Coach Erickson and what he has done with the team. They had a great season last year and they can even get better next season. (ASU defensive line) Coach Stretz is great and my mom got to meet him and the rest of the coaches for the first time so that was good."

A portion of Kennard visit was spent with Stretz viewing game film of the maroon and gold's front four, and explaining to the defensive end how he could fit in with the Sun Devils. "I really like how the defensive line plays," stated Kennard. "Coach Stretz gives them a lot of freedom and they just come loose over the edge, fly around and make plays…that style fits me well."

Despite all of his tremendous football prowess, Kennard isn't forgetting that going to college has another meaning than just honing his skills on the gridiron. "You have to have a big time degree for life after football," he noted. "I want to be a business major and ASU has a great business school so I was impressed with that on my visit."

The timetable for Kennard verbal commitment is likely several months away and could easily take place much closer to the February 2009 signing date. Yet the Desert Vista star noted that he's just a couple of weeks away from reducing his list of favorites to 5-7 schools. "I pretty much already know most of the schools on that list," he said. "I'll be ready to announce that list soon."

Kennard added that he plans to participate in just two more team camps this summer. "I'm going to ASU's team camp on Sunday and I'll be at USC's later this month," he said. "After that I'm just gonna focus on getting ready for my season."

In 2007 Kennard was a consensus All-State selection as he registered 111 tackles and 24.5 sacks. He was a major contributor in Desert Vista's post-season march that ended as 5A1 state runner-up.
