Benjamin Receiving Considerable Interest

When it comes to securing the best in-state talent, the Sun Devils' efforts aren't limited just to the high school ranks. Arizona Western's Marcus Benjamin is the top JC cornerback in Arizona and has already caught the eye of Arizona State and numerous other schools. Devils Digest talked to the Louisiana native who wants to stay in the western region and possibly play in the state of Arizona.

Arizona State offered the 6-1 200 Marcus Benjamin in the spring, and the cornerback has been thoroughly impressed by the maroon and gold thus far. "It's a good program that has good academics and it's a good environment there," he said. "I have a good chance to play early there. I watched them a lot on T.V. and I like how they have a lot of man-to-man coverage and they make a lot of plays in the secondary."

Benjamin has been offered by ASU, Arizona, Colorado, Colorado State, and Ole Miss. LSU, USC, Washington State and Oklahoma have been showing interest in recent weeks.

As a freshman, the corner collected 67 tackles, two interceptions (one returned for a TD), three sacks, and two forced fumbles. "He's a dynamic player, a very physical corner, but also very fast – runs a 4.47," said Arizona Western's Coach Chetwood. "He's the best tackler in our secondary and he can come up to the box and really make plays. He has great footwork and a good nose for the ball. I have no doubt that he'll do great on the next level."

Benjamin's high school coach in Louisiana knew Arizona Western's defensive coordinator, which naturally led to the cornerback's decision to end up in Yuma. "I didn't mind going far from home to play, I wanted to get away from home," Benjamin stated. "I have a son that lives an hour away from here in Parker, so I want to stay out west when I go to college."

Benjamin is a coveted December graduate who is a two for two player in terms of eligibility. Despite the fact that he will sign in the mid-year signing period in December, he doesn't see any need to speed up his timetable for a decision.

"I wanna take my visits during the season," he said." I'm gonna unofficially visit Arizona and Arizona State in the summer, I just don't know the dates yet."
