Newcomer Report

More newcomers saw action in ASU's 41-17 win over Stanford which began the 2008 Pac-10 season. Some of ASU's first-year players recorded milestones of their own and had crucial plays during the contest.

On offense, redshirt freshman Dan Knapp recorded his first catch as a Sun Devil which coincidently went for a two-yard touchdown and an insurance score in the fourth quarter. That was his only catch of the game. Fellow redshirt freshman T.J. Simpson caught an eight-yard pass from his wide receiver position. True freshman running back Ryan Bass rushed once for two yards.

On defense several newcomers saw action once again. Leading the way was JC transfer Pierre Singfield. The cornerback had 5.5 total tackles, including an assist on a tackle for a loss. True freshman linebacker Shelly Lyons has four solo stops and a pass breakup. JC transfer cornerback Terell Carr had three tackles and an interception, his first one as a Sun Devil, late in the game that thwarted the Cardinal comeback.

For the second week in a row true freshman defensive lineman Lawrence Guy had three total tackles, albeit this time playing defensive tackle rather than end. Safety Clint Floyd had one tackle, which occurred on punt coverage. The true freshman caused the Stanford returner to fumble the ball, which resulted in an eight yard loss for the visitors who ultimately recovered the pigskin.

True freshman linebacker Brandon Magee had a lone tackle. Jamaar Jarrett saw his first action in 2008 and the defensive end had half a tackle, as did JC transfer safety Max Tabach and corner Josh Jordan. Defensive end James Brooks had one pass breakup.

Other first-year players who participated in the Stanford game were Gerell Robinson, Jarrell Holman, Oliver Aaron, Thomas Ohmart, Brent Good, and Stanley Malamala.
