Lady Devils Win, But Have Work Ahead

It wasn't impressive or attractive, but it was a victory. ASU Women's basketball coach Charli Turner Thorne worked on getting different rotations into the lineup and got a feel for her team in an 83-61 victory over the Houston Jaguars at Wells Fargo Arena.

"We did not improve as much as I wanted us to," said Turner Thorne, "We have some work to do before next Friday night (the team's season opener). It's hard, they aren't being challenged. I don't think this team tested us."

"It was good for us as coaches to see everybody. We probably should have done a better job pounding it inside. It was good to look at the young players and we ran a little bit better."

"It was good that they mixed their defenses up, it is November 5th and we have already seen three defenses."

ASU senior guard Briann January came out of the gates firing and scored 11 of ASU's first 14 points and finished with 13. She thought it was big to get the first win out of the way and sees her team making progress.

"First one is out of the way," said January. "I think when we got our first win under our belt; you have to be happy with that."

Senior Sybil Dosty led the Devils with 17 points and nine rebounds, despite playing just 15 minutes. Turner Thorne was especially pleased with Dosty's 9-13 performance from the foul line.

"Sybil was good. You expect your 6-2 starting center to have a big game against the Keebler Elves," quipped Turner Thorne, "I give her a ton of credit, because they were swarming her. She had two or three people on her, she went up strong, she drew fouls and she made her free throws tonight. I'm very proud of her."

"I thought we played pretty hard, I know we have a lot to work on," said Dosty, "It was pretty sloppy and we have a lot to work on."

Dosty seemed much more aggressive inside, she credited that to knowing that she was bigger than her opponents.

"I think so, especially when the players are much smaller than me. I look to be aggressive every game."

The concerning stat for ASU was its 22 turnovers; Dosty thinks that is due to it being so early in the season.

"We are just trying to iron things out and getting to know each other," said Dosty, "It's early."

Turner Thorne blamed it on the different lineups and her players not playing with the same group for consistent minutes.

"I think a lot of reasons, it is early. We telegraphed our passes and we were undisciplined at times. It also has to do with the lineups."

Known for her mass substitutions, Turner Thorne said that she won't be continuing that trend this season.

"This is not a team where we will have five in and five out, we will have a stricter rotation. We will bring the young players along." Now January says that it is time to get back to the drawing board and iron out their kinks before it starts for real next Friday against Cleveland State in the opener of the preseason WNIT.

"Just stick to our goals and focus on them in practice. Just paying attention to detail."
