Workman Leads Devils to Rout

Andy Workman doesn't get a change to start very often, but he got one on Friday night because starting right fielder Matt Newman was on the mound. The sophomore took advantage of his opportunity by going 3-5 and driving in four runs to lead ASU to a 12-1 rout of Holy Cross on Friday at Packard Stadium.

Matt Newman got his second start on the mound and continued the trend of dominate starting pitching for ASU. The sophomore lefty picked up his first win of the year by tossing six innings, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out eight.

Centerfielder Jason Kipnis got the Devils on the board early, sending his fifth homer over the right center field wall off of Crusader starter Bobby Holmes.

Jordan Swagerty, getting his first start of the season at first base, made it 2-0 in the second on his third home run of the season, his second of the series.

ASU (10-1) broke the game open in the third, plating four runs. Zack MacPhee got the inning started with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kipnis walked and then Zach Wilson made it 3-0 on an RBI double to score MacPhee.

Carlos Ramirez scored Kipnis on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. Kole Calhoun followed with a double to score Wilson and then Workman picked up his first RBI on a single that scored Calhoun.

The Devils offense was back at it in the 5th and it was a leadoff double that got things started again, this time by Carlos Ramirez. Ramirez advanced to third on a Calhoun groundout and scored on a RBI double by Workman to make it 7-0.

ASU continued to pile it on in the sixth and eventually chased Holmes from the game. Raoul Torrez led off the frame with a single to left and advanced to second on a balk. After Holmes struck out MacPhee, he was removed in favor of John Pedrotty who was greeted by Jason Kipnis' RBI single.

Kipnis stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a groundout by Zach Wilson. Andy Workman capped the big inning and his big day on a two run single to make it 11-1.

Austin Barnes added an RBI single in the seventh to cap the Sun Devils scoring.

After Newman exited after the sixth, Jake Borup worked a scoreless inning before giving way to Jeeter Ishida who struck out two in his two innings of work.

Jason Kipnis went 3-4 and drove in two runs for ASU, Zach Wilson added two RBI's as well.

Holy Cross (0-7) scored its only run off of Newman in the fourth on an RBI single by Nick Ciardiello.

The Devils and Crusaders will wrap up their three game series tomorrow afternoon at Packard Stadium. Seth Blair is expected to start for ASU with the game getting underway at 12 PM.
