Sun Devils on Franklin's short list

24 hours after Keala King committed to Arizona State, the Sun Devil staff visited his Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei teammate Gary Franklin. Is the combo guard inclined to follow King to Tempe? Devils Digest talked to Franklin about his recruitment, the suitors in his short list and his timetable for a decision.

"The visit went very well, and I like them a lot," said the 6-2 180 Franklin about his in-home visit with Arizona State Head Coach Herb Sendek and his assistants last Thursday. "I've been there on an unofficial visit so I know a lot about the program, the coaches and the players. Coach Sendek has a lot of experience coaching with coaches like Rick Pitino and Billy Donovan. I like just about everything about the program.

"I'm a pretty good shooter and they like to shoot the three a lot. If I came there I think I could start right away and it would be cool playing with some players that I have played with before."

Franklin is naturally referring first and foremost to King, who didn't waste anytime following his pledge to the maroon and gold last Wednesday, to send a text message to Franklin informing him of his decision and undoubtedly trying to sway him over.

"Even though I really like playing with Keala," Franklin stated, "I still look at recruiting for what is best for me. The best place for him may not be the best place for me."

Gary Franklin has also entertained Baylor in his house as well last week and indicated that he will visit that school officially this weekend. "I'm also going to visit Cal on the weekend of October 3rd," Franklin commented. "Those two schools, Arizona, Arizona State, and Connecticut are my top five." He added that he plans to officially visit the other three schools on this list.

The guard noted that USC, the school he de-committed from following Head Coach Tim Floyd's departure is still in the picture, although they appear to be on the outside looking in compared to the other programs he mentioned.

Previously Franklin had stated that he was leaning towards inking his signature on a letter of intent in the late signing period in April. Has his timetable changed because of his upcoming official visits and possibly others to come this fall?

"I still might end up signing in April," the four-star guard prospect claimed, "but I can also see myself signing in November."
