Arizona State Enters the Onyenegecha Sweepstakes

For a while, it has been a two-team race for the services of blue chip cornerback Chijoke Onyenegecha. Have Florida State and Oklahoma been challenged now by the Sun Devils? talked to coveted cornerback.

"It was cool…just wonderful." said the San Francisco City College standout about his visit to Tempe. "(ASU cornerbacks) coach English was really cool. Him and I get along real well...Jason Shivers was my host. I really enjoyed hanging out with him and the other players. I got along with all of them." The highly desirable cornerback, who was clocked in a 10.28 in the 100-meters, also enjoyed the Sun Devils' facilities, and summed up the whole visit as "perfect."

The 6-3, 205 Onyenegecha says ASU was a school that was recruiting him early on, and for whatever reason stopped contacting him for a while. "I always looked at Pac-10 teams. I'm happy they started recruiting me again. I'm not holding anything against them (smile)." To further prove that point, he lists Arizona State as his second favorite school behind Florida State, while Oklahoma is third. "Coach English will be coming for an in-home visit on Wednesday, and I'm gonna narrow my list to two after that." While the cornerback didn't give any of the three teams a distinct advantage, he did say, "There's a good chance that ASU will make my top two."

Chijoke Onyenegecha's height, size, and speed (4.3) are tangibles that would make any NFL scout salivate. Therefore, landing one of the best cornerbacks nationwide, as well as one of the best athletes on the West Coast this recruiting season, would be a monumental feat for the Sun Devils. In the "pass-happy" Pac-10 conference, one can never have enough talented cornerbacks…
