ASU lost its first game of the season when it dropped the series
opener 11-5. Mark Sopko was the Friday starter and lasted three innings, not giving up a
run. Beau Vaughan (1-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs in
his 1 2/3 innings of work. Robbie McClellan, Brett Bordes, and Carlos
Arguello gave up seven runs combined in 2 1/3 innings.
ASU built a 2-0 lead off of a Dennis Wyrick double down the left field line in
the 4th inning, but Long Beach State scored 11 unanswered runs in the next 3
innings. In the top of the 9th inning, Rodney Allen scored his second run of
the game, and Ryan Bosch and Andre Ethier would also score. Jeff Larish was the only Devil to have a multi-hit game.
Starter Jered Liebeck improved to 2-0 on the season with his solid effort. The
Devils won the game 3-0 off of Liebeck's complete game.
In the top of the 4th inning, Dustin Pedroia led off with a double to right
field and would score later in the inning off of a Jeff Larish single. Larish
scored in the 7th inning and ASU added another run in the ninth,
when Andre Ethier crossed the plate off of a Joel Bocchi single.
In another close game, ASU took the rubber match of the series with a 4-2 win.
Freshman Erik Averill pitched another solid game, lasting 6 2/3 innings while
giving up two runs and six hits. Beau Vaughan bounced back from this Friday
outing, pitching 1 1/3 inning, not giving up a hit. Closer Ryan Schroyer
picked up his third save of the year after picking up his three outs in the 9th
The Devils scored all of their runs in the 2nd inning. Dennis Wyrick singled
to centerfield, scoring Jeremy West and Ethier. Ryan Bosch scored off of a
Steve Garrabrants single, and Wyrick would score off of a fielder's choice.
ASU returns to Tempe this weekend to face BYU who lost 2 out of 3 to Arizona.
