ASU Throttles Gonzaga

The 4th ranked ASU baseball returned to Packard Stadium on Monday and defeated Gonzaga 17-5 in front of 1,490 fans. The win improves the Devils to 18-1 on the year.

Freshman Erik Averill was roughed up in the start. He gave up three runs in just two innings pitched. Ben Thurmond picked up his second win of the year in his three innings pitched. Chris Beatty and Robbie McClellan also saw time out of the bullpen.

ASU scored in the 1st inning for the tenth time this season when Dustin Pedroia and Ryan Buck crossed the plate to take a 2-0 lead. The 3rd inning brought seven runs for ASU. Steve Garrabrants hit a grand slam, which was his fourth home run of the year. Two hitters later, Rodney Allen went deep, scoring two Devils. ASU would add two more runs in the 4th inning, and exploded again in the 5th for six more runs. In the 5th, Garrabrants doubled to left center, scoring Andre Ethier and Mike Guerrero. Garrabrants would later score with Frank Mesa off of a Tuffy Gosewisch single.

ASU hosts Dayton on Friday and 14th ranked Notre Dame on Saturday and Sunday. Both teams have not played a game this season.
