ASU to host Jacksonville in NIT

The Sun Devils were one of the last teams left out of the NCAA Tournament, which promoted the NIT Tournament to not only invite them to their event but also rank them as one the four #1 seeds. ASU will host the #8 seed Jacksonville Dolphins on Tuesday at 8 pm PT at Wells Fargo Arena. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

The Dolphins (19-12, 14-6) were the co-champions of the Atlantic Sun Conference, and were upset in their conference championship semi-finals by Mercer 66-63.

Jacksonville is coached by Cliff Warren who is in his fifth year with the Dolphins has posted a 71-79 record. After finishing 1-26 in his inaugural season at Jacksonville, his first ever too as a head coach, Warren never registered a losing record with the Dolphins. Jacksonville has reached the NIT in 2008-09 season.

The Dolphins' high scorer is 5-10 165 senior guard Ben Smith who averages 19.7 ppg. Senior forward 6-6 205 Lehmon Colbert is the only other Jacksonville player who averages in double figures at 12.2.

Jacksonville averages 70.3 ppg scoring while allowing 67.6 ppg.

This will be the second NIT appearance for the Sun Devils under Herb Sendek. In the 2007-08 season ASU won its first two games against Alabama State and Southern Illinois before falling to Florida at home in the third contest.

If the Sun Devils prevail in this game they will meet the winner of the 4th/5th seed game between Seton Hall/Texas Tech. The date, time and location of that contest will be determined later this week.
