Kelly Strong in Shutout of Houston

With Pac-10 conference play just one week away, it is still unknown whether All-American left hander Josh Spence will be able to go for ASU. Therefore, the door has been open for others to step up and find their way into the starting rotation such as JC transfer Merrill Kelly, who tossed seven shutout innings to lead the No. 1 Sun Devils to a 6-0 win over Houston.

While Kelly was dominant on the mound, the offense was provided by sophomore first baseman Zach Wilson, who hit his second home run of the season and drove in five of ASU's six runs.

ASU (19-0) got to UH sophomore right hander Michael Goodnight right away in the first inning. The Cougars' top starter walked sophomore Zak MacPhee and senior Kole Calhoun, before sophomore Riccio Torrez made it 1-0 with a double down the left field line.

The rest of the Sun Devils' offense was provided by Wilson.

Calhoun singled to start the bottom of the third and Riccio Torrez was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Wilson to blast a big fly to center, putting ASU up 4-0.

Just an inning later, Wilson sent a two-out, two-run double down the left field line that plated a pair of runs to make it 6-0.

The Sun Devils wouldn't score again after the fourth inning, but six runs were more than enough for Kelly and the bullpen.

Kelly allowed just two hits, one of them an infield single and struck out eight to pick up his team leading fifth win of the season.

Mitchell Lambson and Jordan Swagerty each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to close the door on the Cougars (9-8).

Wilson finished 3-4 at the plate, while fellow sophomore Johnny Ruettiger also had three hits for ASU.

The Sun Devils will go for the sweep over UH tomorrow afternoon at Packard Stadium at 12:30PM. Sophomore Jake Borup is expected to make the start for ASU.
