McCombs still pondering his options

Following his official visit to the Sun Devils, Dwight McCombs remains undecided as to when he will pledge and to which team. Devils Digest caught up with the Moraine Valley (IL) Community College standout to get the latest on his recruitment.

"It went pretty well," said the 6-8 240 Dwight McCombs. "The Weatherup Center is something striking. It's a beautiful campus too and I got see how the campus life is. I had a chance to hang out with the players a lot and I got a feel for how they are. I was really comfortable with the guys. We really had a good time hanging out.

"Looking at the campus on the Internet I knew what to expect, and out of all the schools I have been to this is the most beautiful campus. I really enjoyed myself."

McCombs was hosted by Arizona State players Ty Abbott and Jamelle McMillan.

As a sophomore, the forward averaged 22.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 5.1 block shots per game for Moraine Valley, while shooting 69.9% from the field and 60.8% from the charity stripe. Despite a subpar season by the Cyclones, who finished 16-17 overall and 5-9 in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play, McCombs was named to the All-Region IV, All-Region IV tournament and All-Conference first teams.

The forward ranked first in NJCAA Division II in blocked shots, third in field goal percentage and rebounds, and 11th for scoring. The ASU staff has repeatedly indicated to McCombs that they feel that he would be a welcomed addition to their squad.

"The coaches told me like they did before, that they plan to use me like they did Jeff Pendergraph," McCombs stated. "They think I'm the same type of player. They see me playing the 4 of the 5, it just all depends on who we play, the momentum of the game and if they want to go small or big. We have to see what's best when (pre-season) practice starts. That will be key.

"To me it doesn't matter what position I play. At the end of the day I just have two years left so I'm looking to go to a place where I can play."

The forward has attracted a slew of offers from schools such as Minnesota, Arkansas, Auburn, Penn State, Missouri and UTEP. Flanked to his ASU visit by his good friend and Sun Devil signee Brandon Dunson, McCombs admitted that he thought about verbaling to the maroon and gold this past weekend. He will however take his time and could delay his decision as late as middle of next week.

"I wanted to come back and talk to my coach and my father and on Tuesday or Wednesday I'll see what I will do from there," McCombs explained. "I didn't want to do what I did the first time around – rush to a commitment (to Miami of Ohio out of high school a few years ago) and not making sure that this was the right fit for me. I don't think the fit for me there (at ASU) is a question. It's just making sure everybody is on the same page when I make my decision.

"If I commit this week it's gonna be on Tuesday or Wednesday. But if I don't decide then I will take another visit this weekend to Indiana or Auburn. Then I'll have my decision Monday or Tuesday after that visit. My decision is about going to a school where I can play the most and they can help me improve my game and prepare me for the next level."
