Erik Averill (5-0) started the opening game of the Bob Schaefer Classic against Cal State Northridge and improved on his solid year so far. In six innings of work, he gave up two runs and six hits. Javy Lopez and Robbie McClellan came out of the bullpen to finish off the Matadors.
Dustin Pedroia went four for five with three doubles to lead ASU to the 10-2 victory. Jeff Larish also had a solid game, starting off with his triple in the first inning to score Pedroia. He would score later in the inning, as did Jeremy West to give ASU a quick 3-0 lead. The Devils would score in every other inning except the sixth, and pounded out 15 hits in the win. Along with Pedroia and Larish, Steve Garrabrants and Joel Bocchi also had multi-hit games.
Mark Sopko (3-0) started for the Devils, and did not give up a run in the 19-0 pounding of Southern Utah that was called after the seventh inning.
Travis Buck hit for the cycle, the first one since May 2000 for the Devils. He went five for five on the night with seven RBI's with a grand slam in the sixth inning giving him the cycle. The grand slam was the eighth on the year for ASU, and the Devils are now four shy of the record, set by Oklahoma State in 1996. Dustin Pedroia went three for four, for his 18th multi-hit game of the year. Frank Mesa scored three runs to lead the Devils.
ASU had to come from behind against Utah to win their 18th game in a row. Ben Thurmond started the game, but Beau Vaughan (4-1) earned the win. Ryan Schroyer earned his sixth save on the season with his work in the ninth inning.
Utah was up 4-0 before the Devils tied it up in the fifth inning when Garrabrants lead the inning off with a double, and would score when Tuffy Gosewisch hit a double to center field. Gosewisch would score on a bases loaded walk, and Jeremy West singled to left field scoring two. ASU scored two runs in the eighth inning when Dennis Wyrick and Garrabrants would cross the plate.
Jered Liebeck (4-0) notched the win in the 12-2 win over Cal State-Northridge. He lasted five innings, giving up two runs off of five hits.
The Devils took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Jeremy West hit his eighth home run of the year. With a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning, Ryan Bosch singled up the middle to score Buck and Wyrick. ASU added three more runs in the fifth inning, and scored three more in the seventh inning when Jeff Larish hit his Pac-10 leading 11th home run on the year. Ryan Bosch recorded three RBI's and Dennis Wyrick went three for three with two runs scored.
