Erickson pleased with both sides of the ball

In an ideal world a fall camp ending scrimmage shouldn't be an offensive or defensive domination. Saturday morning at Sun Devil Stadium featured just that, as head coach Dennis Erickson noticed improvements on both sides of the ball.

"I thought the offense moved the ball extremely well," Erickson said. "I mean, we need to get it in the end zone a little bit more. The drives were good but the red zone wasn't as good as we need to be. Defensively we played well a lot of the time. We got a little bit tired at the end as you can see. Again, I thought offensively we made great improvement and defensively all around.

We will look at tape and starting Tuesday we're going to start getting ready for Portland State. Mostly the scrimmaging is over other than some situation stuff like red zone or short yardage or goal line, stuff we have to sharpen up a little bit."

Brock Osweiler and Steven Threet shared reps with the first time offense, each scoring one touchdown and generally having similar stats. Samson Szakacsy and Taylor Kelly also performed well as they took their turns with the 2's and 3's. It's difficult to determine when a decision will be made but Erickson hopes after reviewing tape from today's scrimmage, it will paint a clearer picture of which quarterback will earn the starting job.

"I don't know I'll have to look at the tape," Erickson commented. "I think they both did some really good things today. We were going to play a little longer but with our defensive front, it's a little hot out to have that many plays. So I'll evaluate it, there are so many things that you guys think you see out here but when you look at tape, it might be a little different so I hate to evaluate (without looking at the tape).

"Other than that, I think all four of them had their moments. Steven had that first drive as we all know and Brock came in the last drive (and scored) so I don't know. The biggest thing I can say is the improvement of all of them from spring football to camp to now is unbelievable that they made that kind of improvement; I think that's what competition does."

Although the home opener against Portland State is two weeks away, there is no sense of urgency to declare a starter from Erickson and offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone point of view.

"I'll know more when I look at the tape today," Erickson said regarding when a decision will be made. "Like I said, I'd like to make a decision as soon as we can and we'll look and see."

Will Sutton, a typically impactful player, played with reservation during today's scrimmage to avoid injury.

"He has a back problem, it's not bad," Erickson noted. "It's not anything serious."
