Arizona will face its toughest test of this early season on Saturday when the Wildcats host the Iowa Hawkeyes. UA will host Iowa in hopes of upsetting the Hawkeyes to keep its record perfect.
Here are five things that must happen in order for Arizona to come away victorious –
1. Keep the offense simple
Don't expect too many throws downfield as Iowa's defense is designed to keep the offense in front of them. When teams take too many risks, the Hawkeyes often make their opponents pay eventually.
With a very good pass-rushing defensive line and solid secondary, Iowa will use a basic 4-3 defense to disrupt UA's spread. If the Wildcats utilize a lot of screens and quick slants, they could out-duel the Iowa defense.
2. Limit turnover
Iowa can generate turnovers with frequency if the opposing offense isn't on top of its game. Foles must take what's given to him and the ball-carriers have to wrap the ball up to prevent the Hawkeyes from gaining extra possessions.
3. Defense must stop the run
Adam Robinson has been a monster through the first two games and UA hasn't faced a back of his caliber yet. Given Iowa's offensive approach, expect Robinson to get plenty of chances to run the ball Saturday night.
Also expect a healthy dose of backup jewel Hampton; a player the Hawkeyes' staff is extremely high on. One could expect Robinson to need the rest more than he did against Iowa's first two opponents and Hampton will look to fill the void when that happens.
4. Pressure Stanzi
Word is that Ricky Stanzi has improved a lot over the past 12 months and is much more polished than when the Wildcats faced him in Iowa City last season. Arizona must bring the pressure to keep him uncomfortable, which could lead to turnovers.
5. Get Criner the ball frequently
Juron Criner wasn't much of a factor last season, mainly due to the lack of a passing attack with Matt Scott under center. While Iowa's defense is stacked, none of their corners can physically match up with Criner and the Wildcats must take advantage of that. In order to win, Criner must be a big factor on Saturday night.
