Gonzaga's Tony Skinner redeemed himself with a huge defensive play. Skinner, who missed a breakaway dunk that would have sealed the game, blocked a Bearcat field goal attempt that would have tied the game with seconds to go.
Momentum swung in the Bulldogs direction when with 16:17 left to play in the first half, Cincinnati Head Coach Bob Huggins was ejected for receiving a double technical foul while complaining over a traveling call. Blake Stepp knocked down all four free-throws to give his team an 11 point lead, 51-40, the biggest margin held by any team during the game.
Gonzaga played an up-tempo game throughout, often beating the Cincinnati team down court for easy baskets. They used this run and gun style to jump out to an early 8-0 lead. However, the Bearcats quickly battled back and took their first lead of the game, 14-13, at about the midpoint of the first half.
The teams stayed relatively close for the first remainder of the first half, trading the lead 6 times. Gonzaga pulled away at the end of the first half with an 8-0 run, capped by a three pointer from Troy Skinner at the buzzer.
Ronnie Turiaf finished with 22 points on 16-22 free throw shooting and added 10 rebounds.
