News, notes and stats

SALT LAKE CITY-The Cats did not play their best game, but did not need to. They proved to be too talented for Vermont and cruised to an 80-51 win. They advance to the second round and a showdown with Gonzaga. The Cats are 1-0 vs. the Bulldogs. For more stats and notes, read on...

PLAYER OF THE GAME
Salim Stoudamire scored 18 points, including four three pointers. Even more impressive is that he played just seven minutes in the second half.

PLAY OF THE GAME
Andre Iguodala found a streaking Hassan Adams for an alley-oop. Not only did Adams dunk over a helpless Vermont player, but his chin was even with the rim when he slammed it home.

SLOW START
The Wildcats were held scoreless on four of their first five possessions.

NEXT UP
The Cats get Gonzaga in the next game. The Cats are 1-0 against the Bulldogs. They played in 2001, the last time Arizona went to the Final Four.

PAR FOR THE COURSE
No one seed has ever lost to a 16. Arizona is now 5-0 against 16's. The are now 11-4 as a number one seed.

BEEN HERE, DONE THAT
Other than the Colorado State players who are in the same conference as Utah, the three Arizona seniors are the only players in the bracket who have played a game at the Huntsman Center.

IN SALT LAKE
This is the 14th time tournament games have been held at Huntsman. On thirty occasions the state of Utah has hosted games. Arizona is now 4-2 in tournament games played at the arena. The Creighton/Central Michigan game will be the 72nd NCAA Tournament game played in the building, second most of any site. Huntsman is poised to pass Madison Square Garden and trails only Kansas City's Memorial Auditorium (83).

TOURNEY TIME
This is the Wildcats' 19th straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. They are 13-9 in first round games. This was the Catamounts first Tournament appearance.

STRUGGLES CONTINUE
Jason Gardner has missed 17 straight threes. It is his last since the three against Oregon with the crowd chanting his name. He did hit a long two late in the game, but his toe was on the line. WATCH OUT!
Twice this season the Wildcats rattled off 10 game win streaks following a loss. The win over Vermont was the first game following the loss to UCLA.

GOOD PLAYERS
Vermont's roster features the last two America East Players of the Year. Unfortunately, last year's winner, guard T.J. Sorrentine, was injured in the preseason and is out for the remainder of the year.

SCOUTS IN SLC
NBA scouts would be wise to stay in Salt Lake. The eight teams in the region have produced 30 current NBA players. Arizona and Duke have 10 a piece. Cincy has six.

NOT HOMEGROWN
The Cats have just one player on their roster from Arizona, while Vermont has only two in-state players.
