Duke Survives Ram Rally

Duke survived a scare from 14 seed Colorado State University to advance into the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Despite the deceiving 67-57 final score, the Rams gave Duke all it could handle, cutting the margin to only two with under two minutes remaining in the game and holding the Blue Devils to only 35 percent shooting for the game.

Colorado State hung with heavily favored Duke for the entirety of the game. The Rams opened the game with a lead that they held for the first five minutes of play. Duke took their first lead at 15:23 on a free-throw by Dahntay Jones, who led all scorers with 23. CSU jumped back and tied the game at 20 with 7:19 to go. Duke broke the tie with an 11-2 run and a three-pointer from CSU's Andy Birley at the half-time buzzer cut the Duke lead to six at the break.

Duke continued the run into the second half, jumping out on a 6-0 streak to give itself a 12 point, 42-30 lead. The Rams were resilient and battled back, slowly chopping at the Duke lead until they brought it to only three points on a drive to the basket by Matt Williams who also drew the final foul on Dahntay Jones on the play. The crowd got into the game and rallied behind the Rams, but Daniel Ewing stepped up and ran off five straight points to give Duke a 59-51 lead with roughly five minutes left. Brian Greene answered Ewing's points, putting up four of his own to bring the Rams to within two with under three minutes to play.

With 1:54 left, Daniel Ewing fouled Shelton Johnson who missed two free throws that would've tied the game. On Duke's next possession Sheldon Williams grabbed an offensive rebound, one of his 12 total boards, after the Rams had forced Duke into a tough shot at the end of the shot-clock, and made a lay-up to bring the Duke lead to 61-57. The Rams were unable to score again and Duke pulled away in the final seconds on free-throws.
