Cats fall in first round

The Wildcat women's season came to an abrupt end with a 59-47 loss to Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The11th seeded Irish used a 15-0 second half run to upset the sixth-seeded Wildcats who struggled all night to find their shot.

The Irish took a page out of the Stanford playbook and concentrated on stopping freshman Shawntinice Polk. The Cardinal double, triple and even quadruple teamed Polk in the final game of the Pac-10 Tournament. Notre Dame went with a sagging zone, daring the Wildcats to beat them from the outside. The Wildcat guards were not up to the task, shooting just 23.3%.

Alicia Ratay scored 20 points, nine of which came during the 15-0 second-half run that doomed the Wildcats. Courtney LaVere added 15 points for the Irish.

Krista Warren led Arizona with 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Polk added 14 points and 16 rebounds despite being the center of the defense's attention.

It is the first time Joan Bonvicini has lost in the first round of the tournament in her 14 appearances at Arizona and Long Beach State.
