Arizona lost to USC 65-57 on Thursday night as it struggled in many facets of the game. With the loss, Saturday's contest against UCLA has become even bigger than it was before, as the Wildcats will need to win to strengthen its position for a conference championship.

  • Derrick Williams may have played one of the worst games of his Arizona career, as he finished 3-11 from the field for eight points and 11 rebounds.

Williams is obviously better than he played on Thursday, but it does not help that his worst game came when his teammates simply failed to step up.

If Thursday is any indication, it is a bit nerve-wracking to think about what will happen in the tournament when teams choose to collapse their defense on Williams, thus forcing his teammates to step up.

  • While you have to like his aggressiveness, it seemed as if Lamont Jones took the ball to the hoop if he saw any sort of open lane.

Jones finished 3-12 shooting and although he did not turn the ball over, he just seemed to be out of control at times.

Arizona needs Jones to be aggressive in each game but it needs that aggressiveness to come with smarts as well, and Jones did not illustrate that on Thursday.

  • Jesse Perry had a solid game, finishing with 12 points and six rebounds. As long as he is tough on the glass and defensively, Perry is going to get all the minutes he can handle.

He may not be a threat to drop 20 points, but the Wildcats do not really need that from him. Instead, it needs consistent effort and a solid ability to rebound, both of which he had on Thursday.

  • USC only shot 42 percent, but Arizona's defense was still disappointing due in large part to two big time performances. Nikola Vucevic finished with 25 points and Jio Fontan added 21 of his own.

No matter what team Arizona is facing, it is going to be tough to defeat an opponent when two of the opposing players combine for 46 points.

  • Jamelle Horne played a solid game, but was only on the court for 21 minutes.

It is a shame that once he finally gets going, he is unable to do so for long. Arizona is a much better team when Horne plays well, but the problem is that it does not happen often.

  • Lastly, it may be a case of simply being off, but Williams only attempted two free throws days after USC coach Kevin O'Neill mocked him as being a Michael Jordan type in terms of the referee treatment he gets.

Williams is going to have to get to the line more and be more of a factor in general if Arizona is going to defeat UCLA on Saturday. Considering it is the last game at Pauley and the Bruins will have a chance at first place, the Wildcats are going to have to come with their best game.
