Call it a bad few days or a team showing its true colors.
It does not matter how you classify it, Arizona's road trip to Los Angeles was a complete disappointment.
The Wildcats may still win the conference, as they have a considerably easier last two games than the Bruins. However, the excitement surrounding the team has now died down a bit and the experts and analysts that said UA did not deserve its ranking look smart.
There was no sign of a top ten team in Los Angeles, as the Wildcats failed for many reasons and were never able to remedy their problems.
As has been the theme the entire season, Arizona is going to struggle when Lamont Jones is not able to run the offense with effectiveness. On Saturday, he failed to create any rhythm at a position in which teams lean on to do just that.
Jones is not a bad player by any means, but it is up to the point guard to calm the team down and get an easy shot. Instead of doing that, Jones has a tendency to try to put the team on his back.
While that may have been successful against Cal, it surely is not going to work on the better teams that Arizona is certain to face in the upcoming weeks.
That is not to say that it is completely Jones' fault, because it is not by any means. The biggest issue with Saturday's loss was not an individual one, but rather one that surrounded the whole team.
The Bruins knew exactly how they wanted to attack the Wildcats and it seemed as if Arizona could do nothing about it.
Arizona's interior defense was sorely lacking and when a team like UCLA shoots the percentage it does, there are not many teams that are going to beat it.
After Thursday's loss to USC, Derrick Williams tried not to sound too disappointed, as he felt a loss may have been necessary for the team to be able to focus better.
It remains to be seen if this week will have that effect, but the guess here is that most would have rather not found out.
At the end of the day, the week in Los Angeles is not an indication of Arizona's entire season. Instead, it is an indication of what the Wildcats needs to fix in order to improve enough to be able to win a tournament game or two.
