Spring practice update, April 17th

The lights were on at Arizona Stadium as the Cats worked out on the big field. Clock management was a key focus, so the scoreboards were in use. The Wildcats continue to march towards the end of spring practice

As they always do, the Cats finished the practice with a scrimmage. This time John Mackovic added a twist. The Cats would work on time management and a short filled. The offense was situated inside the 50 with no timeouts and needing to score a touchdown.

The offense converted 2-of-6 chances, including the final possession that saw Nic Costa hit Ricky Williams for a nine yard score with less than 11 seconds on the clock.

"We were shooting for three and three," Mackovic confessed. "Three would have been very good."

Costa and John Rattay took all of the snaps in the scrimmage and the 7-on-7 drills. Ryan O'Hara was suited, but did not participate in the scrimmages. Mackovic would not comment on why O'Hara was not participating in Thursday's practice.

The defense spent a lot of time working on nickel and dime packages and added a number of defensive back blitzes out of the sets.

NOTES
*Linebacker Pat Howard had shoulder surgery and will miss the rest of camp and most likely the beginning of fall practice. Mackovic indicated that Howard would have waited until after spring ball to have the procedure but that the team doctors felt it was time. Howard had been working exclusively with the first team and that he had made enough of an impression to be in the mix next season. The injury has been a nagging thing and was not suffered in practice.

*Safety Justin Jochum was injured in last Saturday's scrimmage and has been wearing a yellow "no contact" jersey. He will likely miss Friday's scrimmage. DE Tim Volk sat out practice as well.
