Scrimmage report for April 21st

Situations were the key in Monday's practice. The Cats put the pressure on the defense and did a lot of work in the "scoring zone" with time as an enemy. Time is also the team's enemy of sorts as the Cats have just two practices left in spring football.

"We continued to work on special situations," John Mackovic said. "It has been a lot of fun. The defense had the go of it today. We also spent a considerable amount of time on scoring zone situations."

The Cats did a lot of work in the red zone or what Mackovic likes to call the "scoring zone". The team had mixed success, but Ryan O'Hara did find Andrae Thurman on two occasions.

After that the clock was running as the offense tried to move the ball close enough to kick a field goal. The defense won three-out-of-four, allowing just one Bobby Gill field goal.

Nic Costa recovered from a minor finger injury and showed no ill affects that held him out of much of Friday's scrimmage. He continues to be very accurate, especially underneath and showed his speed in the open field on a couple of occasions.

"Nic (Costa) took all of his repetitions today, but his finger is still swollen and a little sore," said Mackovic.

John Rattay was not so lucky, the junior quarterback is recovering from an ACL injury and was not 100% after Friday's scrimmage.

"John twisted his leg a bit during the scrimmage last Friday, so his knee is a little sore," informed Mackovic.

It was a tough break for Rattay who has played very well at the tail end of spring football. Rattay looked rusty early in the spring after missing nearly six months rehabbing the injury, but has played much better as of late. With his improvement he has seen his reps increase and may have played well enough to be in the mix in the fall.

O'Hara has been on a hot streak of late. He has played well and has been making a number of big plays. His downfield throwing has been very good and he seems to be seeing the field very well.
