Stoops ready for Spring Game

Arizona will have its final scrimmage of the spring on Saturday and head coach Mike Stoops will be looking closely at the current personnel.

The conclusion of the spring session comes this weekend with the scrimmage at Arizona Stadium. It has been a relatively typical spring for UA and this weekend's matchup should give fans a better idea of where this team stands as a whole with the season less than five months away.

Head coach Mike Stoops is looking forward to this weekend's affair, so he can get a better look at his team in another game-like situation.

"We want to try and build off what we have done." Stoops said. "Most of the spring we tried to build some continuity with our offensive line and try to come out of it healthy.

"Hopefully we have a clean game and get some good positive work from it. We still need the next couple of days to see where we are at individually and as a team."

There are many questions surrounding multiple portions of the team this offseason. With the 2010 season ending on a somber note along with plenty of attrition on the team as well as the staff, there are numerous concerns regarding the state of the UA football team. Despite the issues that linger, Stoops is confident with this bunch.

"I like this team," Stoops said. "Each year is drastically different. These players have been really positive and worked extremely hard and that's a big part of it.

"We have enough play makers on both sides of the ball to have a very effective team; a team that can compete across the board and that's what we expect."

Perhaps the biggest concern for Stoops is his offensive line. He loses all five starters from a season ago and it has been a struggle for the unit at times during spring ball. Given the lack of experience along the line, Stoops is still pleased with what he sees with the group.

"A lot will be said about our offensive line, but I like the progress these guys have made," Stoops said. "We have to play much smarter. We can't take nearly the sacks we took a year ago and I think our experience at quarterback and wide receiver should help that."

There is no question that defense is Stoops' specialty. Each year there are certain parts of the defense that look a bit unnerving before the season starts only to see them produce better than expected. Once again, Stoops has a good feeling about his defense heading into the scrimmage.

"Our defense, I feel great about the way we're playing," Stoops said. "I think our secondary is our best collective group we've had. We're going to put more pressure on our secondary guys.

"Trevin (Wade) has played exceptionally well this camp and we need him to step up and be a leader like he was two years ago. If we get Shaquille (Richardson) and Justin Washington back, this is one of our better athletic groups."
