Senior Lovie Jung hit a two run home run in the fifth inning to put the Cats up, 2-0. Jung currently leads the nation with 24 home runs. Junior Mackenzie Vandergeest reached base when Cal pitcher Kelly Anderson walked her. Vandergeest advanced to third when sophomore Jackie Coburn doubled to center field. Vandergeest and Coburn scored when freshman Shelly Schultz singled.
The Cats went up for good in the seventh inning. Jung reached base when she was walked and advanced to third when Vandergeest reached base off of an error by first baseman Jessica Vernaglia. Jung scored when Coburn reached on a fielder's choice. Coburn eventually scored when Schultz singled to left field.<> Freshman Alicia Hollowell pitched another game for the Cats, improving to 33-3. She struck out five batters, gave up four hits and walked one batter.
Arizona will host UCLA on Friday, May 9 at 7 p.m. and Washington on Saturday, May 10 in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m.
May 4 - UA 6, Stanford 0
The No. 1 Arizona Softball (47-4, 16-1) team defeated No. 15 Stanford (36-23, 5-13), 6-0. The Cats are currently on a ten-game winning streak.
ll six of Arizona's runs came in the sixth inning. Sophomore Jackie Coburn scored from third base when sophomore Courtney Fossatti reached base off of an error by Stanford's third baseman Elizabeth Bendig. Sophomore Allyson Von Liechtenstein reached base when Stanford pitcher Dana Sorenson walked her and eventually scored from third off of a wild pitch.
Sophomore Crystal Farley scored when junior Wendy Allen hit a single to right field. With Allen and Fossatti on base, junior Mackenzie Vandergeest hit a three run home run, her 12th home run this season.
Freshman Alicia Hollowell had her ninth one-hitter of the season. Hollowell pitched seven innings and struck out 11 batters. Hollowell improves to 32-3 on the season.
The Cats continue action next weekend when they take on UCLA on Friday, May 9 at 7 p.m. and Washington on May 10 in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m.
May 3 - UA 2, Stanford 1
The No. 1 Arizona softball team defeated No. 15 Stanford 2-1, in Palo Alto, Calif. The Cats moved to 46-4 (15-1) while Stanford dropped to 36-22 (5-12). The Cats got back on track after having their game on Friday against Cal rained out.
The Cats scored in the third inning when junior Wendy Allen single to left field and senior Lovie Jung scored.
The Cardinal tied the game in the fourth inning when catcher Jessica Allister lined out to left field and right fielder Katherine Hoffman scored from third.
Arizona went up for good when junior Erin Palomarez singled to right field and freshman Shelly Schultz scored from third.
Freshman Alicia Hollowell pitched seven innings and struck out eight batters on her way to her 31st victory of the season.
