Melvin Lands Dream Offer

On Tuesday morning, Laveen (Ariz.) Fairfax defensive end Dwight Melvin reeled in an unexpected offer from his top school.

Laveen (Ariz.) Fairfax defensive end Dwight Melvin woke up to a pleasant surprise on Tuesday morning.

"Well, I had just woken up and called coach Kish," he reports to "He said, ‘You know Dwight, coach Stoops and I just got finished watching your game film, and you did an outstanding job.'

"Then coach Stoops got on the phone and he said, 'You would make a great addition to the UA team.' He told me I looked great on film and then he went on to say, ‘We're going to offer you a full scholarship to UA and you'll make a great addition because all we look for is great players with great attitudes.'"

Upon receiving his dream offer, Melvin could not be happier.

"I'm truly excited," shares the 6-foot-1, 265-pound athlete. "That's my number one school. Wow, I'm excited.

"It's the first university I ever went to, I grew up cheering for them, and my sister's friend (Cameron Nelson) played for the team."

Fellow Fairfax defensive end and Arizona signee Reggie Gilbert also played a role in Melvin's motivation to receive the in-state offer.

"We are good friends," Melvin explains. "My freshman year and his sophomore year we were both like, ‘Yeah, we both want to go to UA,' and then when he got offered, I had to go to UA."

The junior, who reports a 3.75 GPA, is scheduled to visit Tucson on June 5th in order to check things out for himself.

He's also planning a visit to UCLA on June 18th. UCLA is home to Melvin's first scholarship offer and joins Arizona, as well as Boise State in his current list of favorites.

"My top three is UA, UCLA, and Boise State," he states. "UA is a hometown school, UCLA has great academics, and Boise State, I love their field."

He hopes to make a trip to Boise as well, and will be looking for three particular things on each of his upcoming visits.

"Great campus, great sports facilities, and great weather," he said.
