Melvin makes the call

Arizona received a commitment from defensive tackle Dwight Melvin on Thursday. Read on to see why he made the choice, what other schools he looked at, and more.

Laveen (Ariz.) Betty H. Fairfax defensive tackle Dwight Melvin has had a good feeling about Arizona for quite some time now.

On Thursday, that good feeling turned into a commitment, as he gave his verbal to Arizona.

"I am pretty excited," Melvin said. "All of the hard work I put into everything paid off"

Melvin was looking at numerous schools, but knows when he started to feel that the UA was the best fit.

"My sister went to Arizona during my freshman and sophomore year and when I went down there to visit her, I fell in love with the campus," Melvin said.

"I met some of the players like Cam Nelson and they showed me around. I also went to some of their games and I just fell in love with their campus, facilities, and everything like that."

Melvin has felt comfortable for Arizona for a while, but did have a list of schools that he was considering,

"My coach wanted me to do a top five schools just in case," he said. "Arizona was first on my list and then UCLA, Arizona State, Penn State, and Boise State."

If Melvin had to choose one aspect of Arizona that led to a decision, he would point to the coaching staff.

"The coaches have sent guys to the NFL, so they know how to do it and what to do to get to the NFL," he said. "I want to get there and wind up playing at the highest level."
