Scrimmage: Recap

Saturday's scrimmage was one of highs and lows. Read on to see which players stood out, which struggled, and more.

FT. HUACHUCA, Ariz. - The scrimmage opened with a three and out from the offense, including a pressure from Sione Tuihalamaka to force a punt.

The offense rebounded in the next series, as Kylan Butler carried the ball on consecutive plays for five and ten yards respectively. Sean Willett caught a seven yard pass to put the offense on the defense's side of the field, and Austin Hill followed suit with a nine yard reception from Nick Foles.

Daniel Jenkins carried the ball three times for 14 yards before Foles delivered a 12-yard strike over the middle to David Douglas for the touchdown. Alex Zendejas came on and capped the scoring drive with a extra point from 30 yards.

Bryson Beirne entered the game and immediately delivered a five-yard strike to Partrick Onwuasor. The offense inched up the field before Garic Wharton made a catch in the open field and made a series of nice moves to pick up 26 yards. The drive stalled on the defense's 30 yard line, and Jaime Salazar missed a 47-yard attempt on fourth down.

Foles re-entered, and threw an interception that was tipped off Onwuasor and Shaquille Richardson before eventually being caught by Derek Earls. The offense lined up again and gave Jenkins two carries for three yards before an incompletion intended for Butler forced a punt.

It was back to the 25-yard line for Foles and the offense, which immediately picked up a first down on a 12-yard pass to Gino Crump. However, a tipped pass from Kirifi Taula, as well as an incompletion and a Foles scramble that gained zero yards resulted in another punt.

Beirne was called back to duty, and on his first attempt hit Richard Morrison for 10 yards. Ka'Deem Carey carried for no gain before Beirne was able to scramble for 10 yards of his own.

On the next play, the quarterback hit Tyler Slavin for five yards before Carey gained 13 yards on a running play. The freshman carried two more times on the drive for 0 yards, and the drive ended when Hank Hobson dropped an interception on the defense's side of the field.

Foles came back looking to get in the endzone, and he immediately hit tight end Drew Robinson for a 25-yard gain. Butler carried twice for 11 yards before Foles completed a pass to Crump for a 24-yard gain. Butler carried three more times for 12 yards before Foles hit Austin Hill for a touchdown strike. Zendejas entered and missed a 37-yard field goal attempt, but was successful on the same attempt a second time.

Foles gave way to Daxx Garman, who had virtually no success in moving the ball down field. Dan Pettinato recorded a sack in the first series, and the offense was forced to try again from the 25-yard line.

Terris Jones entered and carried twice for five yards, and Garman added five yards of his own on the ground before the defense was able to stop the offense on fourth and short.

Beirne came in and was sacked by Christian Upshaw on his first play before gaining a few on the ground. He then found Morrison for eight yards and Taimi Tutogi picked up a first down on fourth and one. On the next play, Beirne appeared to twist his knee and would not return to the scrimmage.

Foles came back in and Carey had a carry for a loss of two yards, gain of five, and two in the air. A few plays later, Morrison had a 12-yard grab and Hill followed with 12 yards of his own.

Tom Savage then came in and found Morrison and Slavin for short gains before being sacked by Dan Pettinato. Two plays later, Salazar hit a 37-yard field goal and the scrimmage was over.
