Just as it did last week, the Wildcats were able to come back and make it a game.
And, just like last week again, fell short.
The UA defense could not stop USC's offense, as the Trojans won 48-41 Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
Arizona started with the ball on its own 20-yard line after choosing to receive the kickoff. Keola Antolin started with a six-yard run and followed with a three-yard gain. Nick Foles then gained two yards on third and one for the first down. Foles found David Douglas for 11 yards on the next play and followed with a nine-yard pass to Dan Buckner.
Antolin was then able to find a yard for the first down and Foles connected with Drew Robinson for 13 yards. Unfortunately for Arizona, the drive then stalled with three incomplete passes and a false start penalty.
The Trojans started on their own 30-yard line with a six-yard pass from Barkley to Brandon Carswell followed by a 28-yard pass to Woods in which numerous players missed tackles. Arizona then made a stand and forced USC into a 46-yard field goal by Andre Heidari that made the score 10-0 with a little under four minutes left in the first quarter.
The Wildcats started on their own 20-yard line with a 14-yard run by Antolin and a 15-yard reception to Taimi Tutogi. Antolin then gained five on the ground but a Trace Biskin holding penalty killed momentum and, once again, Foles threw an interception on third down to McDonald.
The Trojans started on their own 40 with a 20-yard pass to Woods followed by a two-yard run by Tyler. On the next play, blown safety coverage allowed Marqise Lee to score from 38 yards out, as the extra point made it 17-0 in the first quarter.
Arizona started on its own 25 with the game on its way to getting out of hand. Douglas caught an eight-yard pass and then USC was called for a late hit that gave Arizona 15 extra yards. Antolin gained two on the ground and two plays later, Douglas gained 12 in the air. Two more plays after that, Hill made a 18-yard grab and Carey followed with five yards on the ground.
He then lost those five yards on the next play and Douglas gained seven in the air before the Trojans were called for a personal foul, putting Arizona on the USC six-yard line. After a Daniel Jenkins two-yard run, Foles found Tutogi for a four-yard touchdown, but the extra point missed, as Arizona cut it to 17-6 early in the second quarter.
Unfortunately for Arizona, the defensive struggles continued on USC's next drive, as Lee gained 16 yards in the air on the third play of the drive. Tyler then had two straight runs for three yards each and Woods had a five-yard grab for the first down. On the next play, Shaq Richardson was beat and committed a pass interference penalty to save the score.
Woods then caught a six-yard pass, Tyler had a five-yard run, and Woods a nine-yard completion before Xavier Grimble caught a seven-yard touchdown pass as the extra point made it 24-6 with a little under six minutes left in the first half.
After the ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, Antolin started on Arizona's own 40 with a 16-yard run and followed it with one for 17. Two plays later, Carey made a few players miss on a swing pass and scored from 27 yards out, as the extra point was blocked and Arizona cut it to 24-12.
USC started on its own 20-yard line and two plays into the drive, Tyler gained six in the air and woods followed with 14 of his own. Two plays later, Brice Butler caught a five-yard reception and Lee followed up with nine. Two plays later, he caught a six-yard pass and USC was forced into a 4th and short situation with 35 seconds left in the half.
Ross Cumming picked up the first down with a four-yard reception and Lee gained 11 on the next play. Woods followed with a 16-yard reception. The drive then stalled and Heidari was forced to go for the 31-yard field goal, which made the score 27-12 going into the half.
The start of the second half was much of the same, as the Trojans started on their own 33. Woods caught a 15-yard pass and Tyler followed with a 12-yard run. Two plays later, Curtis McNeal had an 11-yard run and Barkley then found Woods for the 28-yard touchdown, as the extra point made it 34-12.
Arizona started on its own seven knowing it had to string together a nice drive. The drive started with a 14-yard pass to Dan Buckner. Two plays later, Antolin gained eight yards in the air and Roberts followed with ten of his own. Two plays after that, Richard Morrison gained seven in the air and Douglas followed with eight.
Carey then gained five on the ground and Crump gained eight in the air. Two plays later, Criner caught a pass for 11 yards and then on the ensuing fourth down and three, Roberts caught a pass for six yards and the first down.
Hill then caught a six-yard pass, Carey ran for four, and then he scored on a one-yard run in which he jumped over the defensive line. Arizona then made the decision to go for two, and the shovel pass from Foles to Hill cut USC's lead to 34-20 with a little over four minutes left in the third quarter.
USC started on its own 20 with a 22-yard pass to Woods and it looked like it would move the ball down the field easily once again. However, two plays later, Shaquille Richardson came up with a huge interception to give the Wildcats the ball at their own 41.
Two plays into the drive, Roberts caught a 10-yard pass and Tutogi followed with 12 more yards in the air. Antolin then ran for eight yards, Crump caught a 12-yard pass, and Carey ran it in from 16 for the touchdown, as the extra point made it 34-27 with under a minute left in the third quarter.
Unfortunately for Arizona, the defense continued to fail, this time starting with a holding penalty by Hank Hobson. Lee then caught a 14-yard pass to get to the UA 46. Two plays later, Barkley finds Lee for what looked to be a touchdown. However, a review brought it back to the Arizona half-yard line. On the next play, Barkley ran it in with ease and the extra point made it 41-27.
The Wildcats had to answer and started on its own 15 with an 11-yard reverse to Garic Wharton followed by a nine-yard reception by Tutogi. Antolin then gained six yards on the ground for the first down and Buckner followed with a ten-yard reception to get to the USC 49-yard line.
Two plays later, Carey gained ten in the air and followed it up with two on the ground before Foles found Hill for 23 yards. After a two-yard gain by Antolin, Foles connected with Criner for the 12-yard touchdown, as the extra point made it 41-34 with a little over 11 minutes left.
The USC offensive dominance continued, as it started on its own 21-yard line with a 44-yard run by McNeal followed by a 25-yard reception by Brice Butler two plays later. Two plays after that, McNeal ran it in from nine yards out, as the extra point made it 48-34 with over nine minutes left.
Needing a score, Arizona started on its own 25 with an 11-yard pass to Crump and two plays later, Buckner caught one for 17. On the next play, Foles was sacked and the drive was basically ended, as Arizona chose to punt on fourth down.
Arizona tried to make a comeback later when it got the ball back and Antolin gained 17 in the air to get to the USC 36. On the next play, Buckner gained 18 and a few plays later, 20 more. Hill then scored from four yards out and Arizona would have an opportunity to get the onside kick with under a minute left. Unfortunately, the kick failed and USC would win the game 48-41.
