Slow start dooms Arizona again

Arizona had another slow start and found itself down 27-6 at half. Despite trying to come back, the Wildcats could not get it done, losing to Oregon State on the road.

All of the troubles that Arizona has had this season happened once again, as a slow start hurt the Wildcats en route to a 37-27 loss at Oregon State.

Oregon State started on its own 20-yard line with a two-yard run by Terron Ward followed by a four-yard pass from Sean Mannion to Ward. On the next play, C.J. Parish pressured Mannion into a bad throw and Shaquille Richardson came up with the interception.

Arizona took over at Oregon State's 28-yard line and on the second play of the drive, Juron Criner gained six yards on a fly sweep. After an incomplete pass intended for Criner, Alex Zendejas came in and missed a 38-yard field goal attempt, as the Wildcats failed to get on the board.

The Beavers took over on their own 21-yard line with a five-yard run by James Rodgers followed by a six-yard pass from Mannion to Ward. The Beavers then committed a false start to lose five yard and Ward gained it back with a ten-yard run. Ward then gained three more yard on the ground, but fumbled, forcing the beavers into a third and seven. On third down, Arizona made the stop as Mannion found Bishop for only four yards.

After the punt, the Wildcats had the ball on their own 13 and Nick Foles found Gino Crump for seven yards. Daniel Jenkins then gained six yards on the ground before Nick Foles threw an incomplete pass on first down. On the next play, Foles found David Roberts for 13 yards. On the next play, Keola Antolin was stopped for no gain and then Austin Hill failed to make a catch on the next play. On third and ten, Foles found Daniel Buckner for nine yards and the Wildcats chose to punt.

Oregon State started on its own eight-yard line with a pass from Mannion to Markus Wheaton for a loss of two yards. On the next play, Mannion found Bishop for 25 yards, followed by a play in which Arizona caught Wheaton for a loss of six yards on the ground. Jovan Stevenson then gained seven in the air and the Beavers gained 12 in the air with Mannion finding Brandin Cooks.

Arizona once again at Wheaton covered on the short pass, as he was unable to gain anything in the air. However, James Rodgers gained 11 in the air on the next play and Stevenson followed with eight yards on the ground. He then followed with a gain of one yard to force a third and short as the first quarter came to an end. On third down, Mannion pushed up the middle for the three-yard gain and first down.

On first down, Stevenson gained five yards on the ground and Mannion found Jordan Jenkins for five yards on the following play. Oregon State then tried a trick play and failed on first down, but Mannion found Stevenson for eight yards on second down. On third and short, Mannion completed a pass to Joe Halahuni for six yards and the first down. Stevenson then gained eight yards and scored from one-yard out, as the extra point made it 7-0 with 11:38 remaining in the first half.

The Wildcats started on their own 20 with a five-yard loss by Ka'Deem Carey, but Buckner followed it up by getting the first down on an 18-yard completion. Foles then found David Douglas for six yards, but Carey was unable to gain anything on the ground on the next play. Foles tried to convert on third down by finding Crump, but the pass came up short and Arizona was forced to punt.

Clayton York came up with a blocked punt and picked it up, easily running it into the end zone, as the extra point made it 14-0 in favor of Oregon State.

Arizona started on its own 20-yard line with the Beavers committing a late hit on Foles to help Arizona gained 15 yards. Carey gained one-yard up the middle and then Foles found Richard Morrison for eight yards. On third down, Carey ran for eight yards and the first down. On that first down, Foles found Carey open on the side for 19 yards. After an incomplete pass, Foles found Buckner for a 28-yard touchdown, but the extra point missed and Arizona found itself down 14-6.

The Beavers started on their own 29-yard line with an incomplete pass then a 15-yard run by Stevenson for the first down. Mannion then connected with Rodgers for three yards and Mannion fumbled the snap on the next play to force a long third down. Mannion found Halahuni, but it was short and it appeared Oregon State would punt. However, the Beavers chose to go for the fake instead and Lance Mitchell picked up 13 yards to keep the drive alive.

Mannion then connected with Wheaton for 21 yards and the Beavers were at Arizona's 15-yard line. The first down play went for a loss of four and the pass on second down was incomplete. On third down, Mannion overthrew an open Wheaton and the Beavers had to settle for a 37-yard field goal that was good, making the score 17-6 in favor of Oregon State with 2:26 left in the first half.

The Wildcats started on their own 16-yard line with the Beavers committing a pass interference on Buckner to give the Wildcats 15 yards. On the next play, Foles had his pass tipped and Michael Doctor came up with the interception.

Starting on Arizona's 39, Mannion found Stevenson for 16 yards and Stevenson then gained a yard on the ground. Mannion then threw an incomplete pass, but found Wheaton for 15 yards on the next play to get to Arizona's 7. Steven gained four on the ground the next play and then Mannion connected with Halahuni for the three-yard touchdown, as the extra point made it 24-6.

On the ensuing kickoff, Jack Baucus fumbled a squib kick and the Beavers had an opportunity to strike again, starting at Arizona's 36-yard line. Mannion then found Jenkins for a 13-yard gain and the Beavers settled for a 40-yard field goal, as they led Arizona 27-6 at the half.

Arizona started the second half with the ball and a 15-yard by Antolin, followed by a one yard gain on the ground. Foles found Buckner for two yards on the next play and then connected with Crump for 12 yards. On the next play, Jenkins fumbled a handoff and the Beavers were able to recover on their own 42. Stevenson gained one yard on the ground and then followed by gaining three more. On third down, Arizona was able to come up with the stop and forced the Beavers to punt.

On the first play of the drive for Arizona, Foles went deep into double coverage and Mitchell was able to come up with it, as the Wildcats turned it over again.

Starting on its own 21-yard line, Oregon State got its drive started with a 23-yard pass from Mannion to Bishop. Stevenson then gained six on the ground and Mannion found Rodgers for 21 yards. Stevenson followed with a 17-yard rush, then lost two on the ground on first down. On second down, Halahuni gained five, but an incomplete pass forced OSU to go for the 20-yard field goal field goal, as it made it 30-6 in favor of the Beavers.

Arizona started on its own 17-yard line with an eight-yard completion to David Roberts. Taimi Tutogi then gained five on the ground and Crump gained seven in the air two plays later. Three plays after that, Foles connected with Crump for 47 yards, but was hit extremely hard and was down for a bit before walking off the field under his own power.

On the next play, with Bryson Beirne at quarterback, Antolin was able to score from 13 yards out. Foles then came back in for the two-point conversion and Douglas made the catch to cut the lead to 30-14 with 4:45 left in the third quarter.

On the first play from scrimmage, Richardson intercepted Mannion for the second time, but was able to score on this one, as the 28-yard touchdown cut the lead. The two-point conversion failed, but Arizona had cut the lead to 30-20.

The Beavers started from their own 27 with a 21-yard run by Stevenson followed by a three yard gain on the ground. Mannion then connected with Stevenson for a five-yard completion and Adam Hall committed a personal foul to keep Oregon State moving. Jenkins then ran up the middle for two yards and Wheaton followed with a 13-yard completion. It looks as if Oregon State scored on the next play, but the Beavers were called for holding.

On second and 16, Mannion threw an incomplete pass and on third down, Arizona came up with the stop. The Beavers settled for a 42-yard field goal and it sailed wide, as the Wildcats continued to have some momentum.

With the ball on his own 25-yard line, Foles found Buckner for a gain of 11 yards. Carey then lost two yards on the ground. To start the fourth quarter, Foles completed a 13-yard pass and then an 11-yard pass to Crump. Douglas then gained nine yards and four on the next play. Carey then ran up the middle for five yards and Foles followed with a 23-yard pass to Buckner to Oregon State's one-yard line. Carey was unable to score from the one on first down, but got to the sideline on the next play and into the end zone, as John Bonano's extra point made it 30-27 with a little under 12 minutes left.

Oregon State started on its own 23-yard line with a three-yard run by Stevenson. Mannion then threw an incompletion and gained six on the ground, as the Wildcats forced a punt and took over at its own five-yard line.

Arizona went deep on the first play for an incompletion then Foles found Roberts for an eight-yard gain. Unfortunately, Foles was unable to connect with a receiver on third down and the Wildcats were forced to punt.

Oregon State took over at Arizona's 43-yard line and Mannion found Wheaton for eight yards three plays into the drive. Mannion then completed a pass to Jenkins for nine yards and Rodgers followed by gaining ten on the ground. Jenkins then gained two yards and then lost two on the next play. Rodgers then caught a six-yard completion and the Beavers went for it on fourth and goal from the two. Mannion finds Halahuni, who beat Paul Vassallo, as the extra point gave Oregon State the 37-27 lead with a little over five minutes left.

Starting on its own 20, Foles found Buckner for 39 yards. After a false start penalty, Foles connected with Douglas for 23 yards and followed by forcing an Oregon State pass interference penalty on Buckner. From the Oregon State four-yard line, Foles threw an incomplete pass on first down and Foles ran for three on second down. On third and goal from the one, Antolin gets the draw and is unable to come up with the first down. On fourth down, Foles tried to get it to Buckner, who was unable to come up with the catch, basically ending the game.
