Arizona's players came up in the clutch both offensively and defensively, as the Wildcats defeated the Sun Devils 31-27 at Sun Devil Stadium.
Arizona started on its own 20-yard line with a two-yard pass from Nick Foles to David Douglas and then Gino Crump. ASU was then called offsides and Keola Antolin got the first down with a four-yard run. Foles then connected with Juron Criner for 11 yards and after a seven-yard pass to Dan Buckner, Criner gained 48 yards in the air.
The UA drive then stalled, but was bailed out by a pass interference call on the Sun Devils to give the Wildcats another set of downs. Arizona was able to capitalize, as Antolin ran it in from a yard out and the John Bonano extra point made it 7-0 with 9:41 left.
Arizona State tried to answer by starting on its own 19 and converted a third and long with a 27-yard pass from Brock Osweiler to Gerell Robinson. Aaron Pflugrad then caught a 12-yard pass and two plays later, Osweiler found Jamal Miles for 13. However, on the next play, Osweiler overthrew his receiver and Shaquille Richardson came up with the interception.
After an incomplete pass, Foles found Antolin in the flat for a 46-yard pass, as the Wildcats were able to get to the Sun Devils' three-yard line. Ka'Deem Carey then lost three yards on the ground and Arizona was called for an illegal substitution, forcing a 2nd and goal from the 11. On that second down, Foles threw an incomplete pass and then hit Carey up the middle for the touchdown, as the extra point made it 14-0.
Neeing an answer, ASU started on its own 26 by getting a 17-yard pass to Robinson two yards into the drive. Robinson then caught a six-yard pass and Trevor Kohl caught one for ten yards. On third down, Robinson caught a 34-yard pass and, after an Arizona pass interference call, Cameron Marshall ran it in from two yards out, as the extra point made it 14-7.
With the first quarter coming to an end, Carey had runs of five and 12 before Foles found him for a 10-yard completion a few yards later to end the first with the lead. After an incomplete pass, Foles found Douglas for 16 yards and the first down. Daniel Jenkins then ran for one yard, but the drive stalled after that and Arizona settled for a 49-yard field goal that hit the post.
Robinson then started the ensuing ASU drive with a nine yard completion, followed by a 30-yard pass from Osweiler to Rashad Ross three plays later. Miles gained six on the ground and two plays after that, Mike Willie caught a five-yard pass. On the next play, Osweiler found Robinson for the 11-yard touchdown, as the extra point tied the game at 14. Arizona State looked as if it had forced a three and out, but the Sun Devils committed a late hit on Foles and it kept Arizona's drive alive. A 33-yard run by carey put Arizona in business, but the drive stalled with Foles getting sacked and the UA had to settle for a 27-yard field goal, which was no good.
Two plays into ASU's ensuing drive, Richardson got beat deep again, as Pflugrad caught a 58-yard pass to Arizona's 22-yard line. On the next play, Marshall ran it in and the extra point made it 21-14 with 4:29 left in the first half. Arizona took over, but was only able to muster up a 14-yard pass to Criner before punting with under two minutes left in the half.
Arizona got the ball back towards the end of the first half and was able to get to ASU's 26-yard line with a 17-yard pass to Criner and roughing the passer penalty, as Bonano's 43-yard field goal to end the half was good and ASU led 21-17.
Arizona State started the second half with the ball, but beyond a 20-yard pass to Ross was unable to get anything going, as it punted and Arizona started on its own nine-yard line. The Wildcats started with an 11-yard pass to Douglas, but the drive stalled with two incomplete passes and a false start before a pass to Richard Morrison fell short and forced the Wildcats to punt.
Miles returned the punt 44 yards to Arizona's 23-yard line and Kyle Middlebrooks ran it for 11 yards on the first play from scrimmage. A few plays later, Pflugrad caught a seven-yard pass, but the drive stalled and the Sun Devils settled for the 22-yard field goal to make it 24-17 with 9:24 left in the third.
The teams exchanged punts in the third quarter until Arizona State started a drive on its own 19-yard line with a five-yard run by Marshall. Miles then caught a 16-yard pass and Marquis Flowers was called for a 15-yard penalty. Osweiler then found Robinson for ten yards, but a few plays later, Kevin Ozier's 22-yard catch was negated by a forced fumble by Trevin Wade that was recovered by Derek Earls at Arizona's 16.
A few minutes later, Arizona State had a 2nd and 22 on its own 29-yard line and got 11 from Robinson. On the next play, he caught a 47-yard pass to Arizona's 13. The drive then stalled, however, and ASU settled for the 27-yard field goal that made it 27-17 with 12:33 left.
Arizona took over on its own six-yard line with a personal foul on ASU . Two plays later, buckner caught a 14-yard pass and then criner added one for six before carey had a 15-yard completion. Carey then caught another pass, this one going for 11 yards, before Crump scored on a 33-yard touchdown, as the extra point made it 27-24 with 10:25 left.
ASU took possession and Arizona forced it into a fourth and short and came up with the stop, taking the ball on its own 39-yard line. Foles ran for seven yards on the first play from scrimmage and two plays later, Carey gained 23 yards on the ground. Two plays later, Antolin ran for five yards. Foles then went out with an injury and Bryson Beirne came in, as he found Criner, who broke numerous tackles and scored from 23 yards out, as the extra point made it 31-27 in favor of Arizona with 5:18 left.
Three plays into ASU's drive, Osweiler found Marshall for 11 yards and two plays after that, Ozier caught a pass for 12. In another two plays, Trevin Wade was called for pass interference, but Arizona State's drive came to a screeching halt when Jourdon Grandon came up with a huge interception with about two minutes left that sealed the victory.
