Valiant effort falls short

Arizona gave it a great effort, but in the end just could not get it done, as the UA lost to Florida on the road 78-72.

Arizona gave it all it had on the road at Florida, but just could not do enough to come up with the win, as the Gators defeated the Wildcats 78-72.

Arizona jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead with Perry scoring all of the points, including three from behind the arc. It only took about 40 seconds for the Gators to get the lead, as Patric Young scored four straight points close to the basket to give Florida the 8-5 lead with 14:51 left.

The lead stayed in that range until Erik Murphy, who is coming back from an injury, hit a three-pointer to give the Gators a seven-point lead. A few minutes later, Perry made a free throw and Kevin Parrom made a layup to cut the lead to 18-15 with 8:37 left. Not too long after, Bradley Beal hit a three that gave Florida a six-point lead going into the T.V. timeout with a little over seven minutes left in the half.

Kyle Fogg came back with a three of his own and Perry followed with a layup to quickly cut Florida's lead to one point. However, Mike Rosario hit a three and Young scored on a layup to bring the lead right back up. A three-point play by Fogg then cut the Gators' lead to three with 3:52 left in the first half.

A layup by Angelo Chol cut the lead to one point, but Rosario came back with his third three of the game to push the lead to four. A little over a minute later, a Parrom layup cut Florida;s lead to 32-29. Perry then made a jumper and Parrom added one of his own at the buzzer, as the Wildcats went into the half with a 33-32 lead.

The second half started slowly, as Florida was able to get the lead almost right away and get it to three points with a layup by Young at the 16:50 mark. Bradley Beal then made a layup to increase the lead to five, but Jordin Mayes came back with two free throws and Fogg hit a three to tie the game at 41.

Less than a minute later, Fogg hit another three after one free throw by Casey Prather, as the UA grabbed a two-point lead. After Young tied the game at 44, Fogg made another layup and Perry hit a three-pointer to push Arizona's lead to five. Young's jumper cut the lead to three, but Fogg hit his fourth three-pointer of the game to give the Wildcats a six-point lead.

Arizona's increased its lead to seven with a Perry free-throw and it stayed at 57-50 until about the seven minute mark when Beal made a layup. The teams then exchanged buckets, but Boynton made a three to make it 59-55 with about six minutes left. Erving Walker then hit a floater with five minutes left, as Arizona's lead was only two.

A layup by Boynton off a turnover tied the game at 59 with 3:41 left, but Johnson came right back with a jumper to give Arizona the lead. Boynton then made two free throws and Young hit one to give the Gators a one-point lead with less than two minutes left.

With 44 seconds left, Walker turned the ball over and Johnson found Kevin Parrom for the layup that gave the Wildcats a one-point lead. However, Walker missed a three with 16 seconds left and Young was able to get the rebound and score to give the Gators a 64-63 lead with 14 seconds left.

After Florida hit two free throws to bring the lead to three, Solomon Hill was fouled on a three-point attempt and nailed all three with 3.9 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

In overtime, the Gators opened up a quick two-point lead and Fogg missed the front end of a one and one that could have tied the game had he made both. Will Yeguete then made a bucket to increase the lead to four with less than three minutes left in overtime.

A layup by Perry cut Florida's lead to two and Arizona had a chance to tie, but turned it over, as Hill fouled out right after. Walker hit both free throws and the Gators added a few more, as the game was basically over.
