Three with ties to Cats selected in first round

Three players with ties to the University of Arizona have been selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft. Delmon Young, an outfielder who signed with the Cats was the first player taken by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Joining Young in the first round were current Wildcat outfielder Brian Anderson and pitching recruit Jeff Allison.

Anderson, a graduate of CDO, was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 15th pick. Allison was selected with the next pick by Florida.

The draft will continue over the next two days and as many as four other current Wildcats could be selected. Anderson is almost assured of signing a pro contract as are Young and Allison. It is rare that a first round draft pick does not sign, especially those taken so early.

Several other Wildcat recruits could be taken including Southern Arizona prospects Bryan Opdyke (Catalina Foothills) and Donald Veal (Sierra Vista Buena).
