Long before Leftwich worked for Graham, he got his first coaching job at Stephen F. Austin in 1989 immediately following his graduation from the school. In 1992 he left his alma mater for New Mexico State, where he was the offensive line coach for two seasons.
He returned to the Lone Star State in 1994, taking over as the offensive line coach at North Texas. Leftwich remained the offensive line coach for the Mean Green until 2002, when he first came into contact Graham. From 2003 to 2005, Leftwich was the offensive line coach at Tulsa while Graham was the team's defensive coordiator; and after Graham left for Rice in 2006, Leftwich remained on staff at Tulsa for one more season.
In 2007, Leftwich returned to North Texas where he spent three more seasons. It was in 2010 that Graham brought him back to Tulsa to be his offensive line coach; a position he retained at Pittsburgh when Graham made the switch for the 2011 season.
With Graham on the move once again in 2012, Leftwich has decided to go in a different direction from his former head coach and instead take a position on Rich Rodriguez's staff.
