West Coast Pre-Summer: 2005

What is it about the state of Washington? Players from Washington own a couple of the #1 positions in the west coast 2004 class, and in the 2005 class they're very prominent, including perhaps the #1 player in the class at this point in Martell Webster. Here are the west coast youngsters to watch for this summer...

Almost every year at this time we think the class moving from sophomores to juniors is a bit thin on talent - but then, naturally, more D-1 prospects step up and emerge eventually. At this same stage, though, for the 2005 class, the class is already pretty solid on talent, so it's exciting to consider, if more emerge, how talented this class could possibly be.

The class is actually pretty typically weighted at this point, with more talent at the guard and wing positions than among the bigs. The state of Washington continues its prominence in our rankings, probably boasting the #1 player in the 2005 class on the west coast in shooting guard/small forward WebsterChalmers from Anchorage, Alaska, is more of a combo guard, but he is among the most talented in the 2005 class on the west coast and a national-caliber guard recruit. McGee has a great deal of talent and it will be interesting to see how he develops in the next couple of years. Point guard Watson and combo guard Falley, both from Las Vegas, have a chance to also be elite prospects. Two of the best shooting guards in the west with a chance to be hotly recruited are both named Williams, and both from Washington. In addition to Webster at small forward, Utah has one of the sweetest shooters in the west among any class in DargerJohnson, Spain and Harvey also have pretty clear chances of being considered elite nationally. The bigs, as stated, are a bit thin (in more ways than one), with probably the two prospects that have the most clear-cut chance of getting recruited by elite high majors being Johnson and Hoerner.

At this point we opt not to actually rank the players, but just provide an early list of the standouts at each position.
