It did not take long for Arizona to get on the board, as Robert Refsnyder doubled to follow a single by Alex Mejia, and an error on the left fielder brought in Mejia to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
The Wildcats tried to get something going in the bottom of the fourth as Mejias-Brean got on base with a single. Bobby Brown then reached first on a fielder's choice, causing Mejias-Break to be out at second. Unfortunately, Riley Moore struck out a few batters later and Arizona stranded two runners on base, but was able to keep the 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats once again looked to get more on the board, as the inning started with Brandon Dixon getting hit by a pitch. Joey Rickard then advanced him to second on a bunt before Johnny Field bunted and the UA had bases loaded a few batters later. Unfortunately, the rally once stalled once again as Mejias-Brean struck out with two outs.
Starting pitcher Konner Wade lost his no-hitter with one out in the sixth inning when Lonnie Kauppila hit a ball right at Wade and he was unable to find it after trapping it with his foot. Jake Stewart then came up and hit a double to left field, as Stanford was in business with runners at second and third and only one out.
Tyler Gaffney was able to fly out to center and score a run to tie the game at one before Stephen Piscotty hit a ball off Mejias-Brean and the Cardinal had the 2-1 lead. Brian Ragira then reached on an infield single and Stanford had two runners on with two outs, but the UA was able to get out of the inning.
Brown doubled to lead off the inning for Arizona and Trent Gilbert went for the sacrifice bunt, but Mooneyham overthrew it to first and the Wildcats were able to tie the game and advance to Gilbert to second. After two batters, Rickard beats out a throw to first and Brown was able to score to give the Ua the 3-2 lead after six innings.
The next inning, Austin Wilson was walked and an error a few plays later led to runners on second and third with two outs. Wade was then able to strike out Jake Stewart to hold off the Cardinal and keep the 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Field singled to lead off and then reached second on a balk. A sacrifice fly by Mejia advanced Field to third and Mejias-Brean was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners with one out. Brown then came up and proceeded to pop out, bringing Gilbert up with two outs. Once again, Arizona was unable to take advantage, however, as a groundout ended the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Dixon singled and Rickard followed with a double to put runners at the corners before an intentional walk of Field loaded the bases with one out. Mejia was then hit by a David Schmidt pitch to give Arizona one more run before a double play ended the inning.
Stanford was unable to get anything going in the top of the ninth, and Arizona will now enter Sunday's game going for the sweep of the second –ranked team in the country.
