The Arizona Wildcats made an appearance at an open gym and liked the Chicago native enough to offer him a scholarship.
"It was crazy," Matthews said with a smile. "I was just resting and I woke up and my mom had just got off the phone with Coach [Nunn], and they had told her that Arizona had recently offered me.
"It was like, 'Is this for real?'. I didn't know they were that interested at first. I'm just glad they offered me. It's a blessing."
This weekend, his Meanstreets 15U squad was playing up an age division, but he was still able to show off his impressive skill set. Aside from a smooth outside jumper, Matthews has a quick first step and the ability to get into the paint at will.
"I'm a combo guard," Matthews said. "I can play the point and the wing and I like to get my teammates involved, attack the rim, and shoot the three as well."
At six-foot-three with a bevy of offensive go-to moves, his size and abilities are far advanced for his age. He admits he needs to improve on his strength, speed, and giving 100 percent all the time, but those all seem to be directly correlated to maturing, gaining experience, and getting older.
Matthews noted that Michigan State, Marquette, Illinois, Tennessee, UCLA, and Providence have also been in contact recently.
So what's it going to take to land this young phenom?
"I want to build a relationship with the school," Matthews said. "What the school can offer me, but also what I can bring to the school as well. I like to get out and run, move in the fastbreak and play tough defense."
