Denker ready to start

B.J. Denker is ready to get started at Arizona. Read on for his thoughts about next season, his message to the fans, and more.

The Wildcat's season will hinge in large part on the play and health of senior quarterback Matt Scott. While coaches have expressed supreme confidence in Scott, the backup quarterback situation is still a topic of much concern for UA fans.

To bolster the team's quarterback depth, Rich Rodriguez delved into the junior college ranks to sign Cerritos (Calif.) Community College quarterback B.J. Denker. Denker put up impressive numbers running and throwing the ball last year and is excited to begin his UA career.

"I'm really ready to be a Wildcat," Denker said. "I'm trying to come in as prepared as possible because the coaches need me ready to play, if need be.

"They say they like the fact that I'm a little older and believe my experience will help my transition. The coaches didn't recruit me to sit for three years and develop."

Once Denker committed to UA, he knew he made the right choice.

"Tucson felt like home to me," Denker said. "It's on the west coast, which is nice and I just like everything about the program. The offense the coaches run also fits me well.

"The coaches expect their quarterbacks to be able to beat defenses with their arm, but they also need to be able to make plays with their legs. I feel I can do both pretty well."

While Denker hasn't practiced with his future Wildcat teammates, he is doing everything possible to ease his transition to Division 1 football.

"I'm working and preparing," Denker said. "I'm getting bigger and faster and working on my touch. I'm doing what I can until the practices start."

As Denker gets ready to put on the uniform, he has a message for UA fans.

"I'm going to give everything I've got to help out the program," Denker said. "Everyone get ready to Bear Down."
