Allensworth talks Cal offer

Arizona commit Darius Allensworth was offered by Cal on Thursday. Read on for his thoughts on the offer, Arizona, and more.

On Thursday, 2012 Arizona Wildcat commit Darius Allensworth received a scholarship offer from the University of California at Berkeley. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound cornerback was excited about the offer, but still remains committed to Arizona.

"I'm really excited right now because it's a program with great tradition and a place to get a good education," Allensworth said. "But, I'm still committed to Arizona, of course."

Both schools can offer the same things to Allensworth as far as football and education.

"I think I can get maybe a little bit better education (at Cal), but both are seven hours from my doorstep, so they're the same distance, just with one in California and the other in Arizona," he said.

Allensworth has had contact with the California coaches after he committed to the Wildcats, but didn't think that they were going to offer him a scholarship.

"Coach Howard and Coach Tedford have been keeping contact with me, but the offer was kind of a surprise," he said.

He still prefers the Arizona defense to the Golden Bear defense and cited the new scheme as one of the primary reasons.

"I like Arizona's defensive style a lot," he said. "Mainly, because they run a 3-3-5. I like both systems, but I'm committed to Arizona and that's the system that I like more."

Allensworth also visited the campus at Berkeley in February. It was a trip he took with other players on his high school team and although he didn't get to talk to very many of the coaches, he did see the campus. He was more impressed with the Arizona campus because of the coach interaction.

"I liked Arizona's visit better because I was with coaches and players more," Allensworth said. "We really didn't know where we were going at first, but with the coaches, they were showing us what was there and what to look at.

"It's really easy to learn the campus there. I went back the next day and I still knew where everything was. It's really nice and I see myself being there next fall."

The cornerback has still kept constant contact with the Arizona coaches, specifically Coach Anae, his primary recruiter.

"I talk to Coach Anae as much as I can," Allensworth said. "I still keep in really close contact with them and we talk about everything."
