Standing 6-foot-4, Pickens is an accurate shooter and a crafty scorer around the basket and while he isn't a great athlete, he uses his strength and feel for the game to stay in front of quicker players.
It's safe to say college coaches noticed Pickens this summer.
"I got a lot more attention during the summer," Pickens said. "I got some offers from schools like Arizona, New Mexico and Boston College, and it was nice they noticed me. I've put in a lot of hard work over the summer and I'm trying to develop into the very best player I can be."
Pickens will not name any favorites, but is intrigued by the Arizona offer.
"Anytime you get an offer from a school like Arizona it's a good thing," Pickens said. "The school is really rich in tradition and Coach Miller is a good coach.
"Every high school player in the state knows what a good program Arizona is. They've put a lot of players in the NBA, and a lot of in-state kids at that, and that's what every high school player's goal is. I was down there earlier this year and everything went very well."
Although Pickens is flattered to get offers from big-name schools, he doesn't plan on deciding anytime soon.
"I want to wait until my senior year before I make a decision," Pickens said. "I'm going to continue to work really hard at everything like my shooting, ballhandling, and defense.
"I just want to take my time and continue to get better and then decide on the best school for me."
